Question:
I need help finding more protein ideas.......
I am not getting near enough protein and I really don't like any shakes or bars, BUT I am willing to try some that are extremly GOOD!!! I hate milk and they all remind me of milk, well at least the ones I've tried. Any good products that don't taste like milk or chalk, or food ideas for me? TIA — Robin A. I don't do protein shakes at all. I do have 1/2 of a detour bar a day, but
I try to get most of my protein from what I eat. I have one egg a day, I
like tuna salad made with boiled eggs and only enough mayo to hold it
together. I have fish at least once a week, I snack on hard cheese or
cottage cheese. I have grilled chicken or deli turkey for meals. Another
good source is beans. I have always been told it is best to get your
protein from food instead of supplements.

Tryy the Nectar family or Whey Protein Isolate. Both are more juice-like
than milky when made with water.

Check out the clear protein drinks in the regrig. section at your local
GNC. They taste a little too thick and sweet (even if they are sugar free)
to me, so I cut 'em in half by adding the same amount of crystal lite to
it. One bottle of Nitro-tech has 40 gr. of protein, it's clear and it
dosen't taste bad at all. Also try string cheese. Besides being pretty good
in protein, you can take your time eating it by pulling it off in strings
and eating it slowly.

IsoPure Zero Carb ready made drinks. Like Kool-aid and my saving grace! I
haven't tried every powdered drink out there but couldn't take any of them,
even tried the Nectar in the apple flavor was to icky. But I can drink the
Apple Melon flavor no problem. They are around $3-$3.50, but I see it this
way, I would have eaten way more than that pre-op! I see it as justified
spending, GNC lets you bring back anything that doesn't sit right with you,
then if you find a flavor you can shop around, I found a place that sells
them for $3.25, so worth being able to drink that 40 grams without gagging!

I swear by Unjury chocolate protein powder. It tastes just like chocolate
milk. I think they have single packets that you could order and try.

Have you tried the Atkins Advantage shakes? I really like them. Eggs have
9 grams of protein each. You can get a book at the bookstore that will
tell you the grams of protein for each food. Hope this helps.

Do you like edamame? (the soy beans you get at sushi bars). You can get
them pre-shelled and pre-cooked, now-a-days in the freezer section and in
the regular ready to eat area at Trader Joes. They are 10g per 1/2 cup and
easy to chew up/digest. They are just fresh clean tasting. Not really
vegetable-y at all. I love them.

I never liked those protein shakes, either. I sometimes use the Nectar
brand Very Cherry Berry. I'm not wild about it mixed according to the
directions, but it is good if you use one scoop of the powder into 24
ounces of s/f Koolaid or Crystal Light (use some kind of a "red"
variety--raspberry, fruit punch, strawberry, etc.). I also have become
addicted to Rocomojo. It's billed as a coffee substitute, but doesn't
taste much like coffee to me. As long as I think of it as another beverage
in the hot beverage family, then I'm okay that it doesn't taste just like
coffee. It's made from roasted soy beans, and has 13 grams of protein per
cup. Again, I find it a little strong made by package directions, so I use
20 ounces of water per scoop. Two cups every morning gets me over 1/3 of
my daily protein. You can find Rocomojo through their web site
(rocomojo.com). Other web sites sell it, too. The best deal lately has
been at efoodpantry.com. As for bars, I don't like many of them either
(taste and texture of cardboard), but I do like the Zone Perfect brand.
They use some kind of protein puffs, so they're kind of like Rice Krispies
encased in chocolate. They have about 200 calories per bar. The listed
carb count is high (around 20) but I think a lot of those are from sugar
alcohols, so my guess is the net carb count is considerably lower. I don't
eat them often, but they come in handy in a pinch. I teach a night class
two nights a week after work, and these bars make a filling dinner
substitute for me on occasion.

It's hard to find good sources of protein other than the shakes without
getting too much fat and cholesterol. There are protein bars out there
(but I've found them to be way to chalky tasting or they have too much
sugar/carbs). I use Sci Fit Strawberry flavor protein mix. It can be
mixed with fruit juice, water or milk. I use skim milk. I know you're not
big on milk, so you could try it with juice (like a smoothie) or with
water. I've found yogurt, low-fat cheese, peanut butter, eggs and meat to
have the most sources of protein. There's also a liquid protein supplement
you can find at any nutrition store. It doesn't taste so hot, even though
it's "cherry" flavored. But, if you can handle it, that may be
an alternative. Apparently, you can mix this with juice as well. I've
found for meals, that Healthy Choice & Lean Cuisine meals offer high
protein selections that are also low in fat/cholesterol. The only drawback
is the sodium and sometimes the carbs (depending on which meal you choose).
I hope that this helps. Good Luck!!!
