Question:
How to go about
I would love some comments on how others have gone about "feeding the rest of the family". I am a pre-op LapBand stay at home mom who will have to continue to feed my two small children (hubby can fend for himself.. ha ha) after surgery! I am concerned about the temptation of the food I'm feeding them (mostly during the 1st 3 weeks of liquids).... anyone else dealing with this??? — Mary P. (posted on June 25, 2003)

I thought the first few days home after surgery were the worst as far as
temptation goes. I kept looking at all the goodies in my kitchen and
watched my teenage daughters eating all this good stuff. It drove me nuts!
About a week out I cheated and ate two bites of scrambled eggs. That was a
BIG mistake! I was sick for 3 days and couldn't even keep water down. I
finally confessed to my surgeon. He scolded me then scheduled an immediate
endoscopy. That was enough for me! I haven't wanted to eat much of anything
since, LOL!

You will not believe me but I had no desire to eat what my family was
eating after I started cooking again. I made sure to make them things that
I did not like.(like fish) Now I am a ritualistic eater ...I am never
hungery so I mostly always eat the same thing all the time..either chicken
breast or scrambled egg whites and cheese.

I am thankful that I cooked a bunch of stuff up in advance, and also bought
canned/frozen dinners to get them by. I also kept plenty of luncheon type
foods (lunchmeat, cheese, etc) on hand for them. I tried cooking a few
times early post-op - not good lol. I tried eating first - figured if was
not hungry it wouldn't be an issue - ok. Not good - I was nauseated by the
smells on top of my full tummy. So then I tried not eating first and was
nauseated by the smells on my empty tummy. Basically, they ate a lot of
toss it in the micro foods - they survived!

the first day or two after surgery, i was a slug and did no household
stuff. after that i did do some cooking. it truly didn't bother me - i
simply had no desire to eat. the one thing i had to watch out for was
unconsciously tasting things as i was cooking. once or twice i found
myself with something in my mouth that i hadn't intended and i spit it out.
if you're concerned, how about making some things in advance that you can
stick in the freezer and just reheat? or perhaps (and this is a radical
thought, i know), your husband could cook for the kids????

Hi, Im a stay at home Mom of two also and I can truly say it did not bother
me at all. To see them eat chips and cookies and then me cooking for them
was no big deal. I was never hungry and did not want to mess anything up
with my new tummy so it never really bother me. Now I do have to say some
things I got into the habit of was kinda hard like tasting there juice or
seeing if there food was too hot but I would always catch myself before I
did anything. Teena(RYN 4/8/03~down65#)
