Question:
Cost of hiatal hernia operation?
I'm self pay. The by pass cost 25,000. I'm waiting for medical clearance and surgery date. However I also need a hiatal hernia repair. Does anyone have any idea what that would cost me additionally? — Carla F. (posted on June 3, 2003)

I don't have a real answer, just another question. I've read about people
purchasing an individual insurance policy, if they don't have insurance, or
have insurance that doesn't pay. Would this be an option for you? I'm
thinking that maybe the insurance might pay for the hernia portion, or
something along those lines. Anyway, that's the first thing that popped
into my head. Just thought I'd say it. ;)

That should be taken care of when you have your bypass surgery. It is VERY
common for us to have hiatal hernias and they are repaired during the wls.
My bypass was $17,000 and that includes removal of the GB or/and hernia
repair, whatever needs to be done, not an extra charge. Ask your doctor

I too have a hiatal hernia. My Lap-RNY was on May 6, 2003 and I choose not
to have the hernia repaired. My Gastroenterologist told me it wasn't
really necessary since after the surgery your body only produces a tiny
amount of stomach acid in your new pouch. I have had absolutely no
problems whatsoever with reflux or anything else related to my hiatal
hernia since my surgery. Hiatal hernias are quite common and most people
do not get them repaired, so unless your doctor has reasons why he thinks
you must get it repaired, try discussing with him what would happen if you
didn't. Just some thoughts for you, but by all means, go with what your
doctor suggests. Good luck.
