Question:
Has anyone used Splenda to make candy?

Hope this doesn't post twice. But i am having a real chocolate attack here and have a great recipe for "skillet fudge". Anyone know if spenda will work? Thanks — Delores S. (posted on May 22, 2003)

I doubt it will work in fudge. Unfortunately splenda (as great as it is) doesn't add the bulk and silk of real sugar (sigh...), but Sugarlike is supposed to be great in that. Anyway, you could just try it and see - but again, I doubt it.

If you go to slepnda.com they will tell you what to add in receipies (common ones atleast) to make the bulk like texture of real sugar. Try that web site and see what happens. Good luck!

My favorite homemade candy is called Oatmeal Candy....it is Sugar, nuts, oatmeal and coco powder. Since I can no longer have sugar, my Mom at Christmas made it with spenda. She didn't tell anyone but me, so I didn't eat it in front on anyone. They all said WOW this is even better than last years batch. It is smoother. I will say that it did change the texture. But is was GREAT !!!! You may have to play around with it.

I have cooked and baked with Splenda - the pourable kind and the packets. Use the pourable kind for recipes where you need the bulk and consistancy of sugar, but be aware there are some carbs in it, and they add up if you use a lot of the pourable kind and are watching carbs real close. I make a lovely New York - style cheese cake with Splenda and it comes out just fine. By the way - I'd like the recipes for the oatmeal candy and the skillet fudge! Is there a place on obesity help to put recipes? If not, it might be nice to be able to post some recipes for things we eat now in smaller batches or have adapted recipes for, and also for new post ops to give them some ideas.

Recipes please!!

That said, I'd love to try some stuff with splenda, I've made some cheesecakes.. I htink I tried to make them too low fat though, they weren't that great. I am going to try to make some lemon poppy seed bread this weekend with splenda and SOY flour.

Sharon Hagins, you got my mouth watering with your description of oatmeal candy. Could you get the recipe from your mom and post it? Please? And I think a recipe listing would be a wonderful idea. I'm looking for a good recipe for oatmeal cookies that doesn't use much flour. I made some with half protien powder, half flour and splenda. Tasted great, but crumbled into granola and I had to eat it with a spoon.

I use Slenda in a lot of recipes from fruit dip to apple pie. But it does not work well in candy. There is a candy company in Cincinnati Ohio that makes several sugar free chocolate candys. The best is Turtles they make milk and dark chocolate with carmel and pecans. You can't tell the difference. I know they have a website. The company is Fawn Confectionary. Good Luck

I have a wonderful recipe for chocolate fudge and for peanut butter fudge and they are GREAT! They both use turbinado sugar and you can't tell a difference! I'm at work now and don't have the recipe in front of me (and it's sooooo easy). Click on my profile page or visit my website at www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny for ordering information. You can email me if you'd like the recipe for the fudge and then decide if you want to order the book. There's also recipes and photos on my site for old-fashioned soft peanut butter cookies and hot fudge pudding cake.
