Question:
I am 5 months post op and am losing my hair can I color it at this point.

Or will I go bald? I told my husband this is such a small price to pay for feeling as good as I do. I am down 60 pounds and from a size 26 to a 18-20. I am getting self tanning lotion and a new do. Wow what a life!    — Kathy V. (posted on May 20, 2003)

I do my hair every 4-6 weeks and my surgery never stopped my schedule! I am getting thin hair, but that is not from the hair dye b/c my hair is strong and healthy. I also have been going tanning since my surgery, I did wait until my 2nd month out, I think. I feel so good and I want to look my best and OMG I LOVE shopping in the normal section with cute stylish clothes, I feel like a teenager again lol. Good luck and have fun with yourself :o)

Hair dye should never be used on hair that is breaking or weak. I made the mistake of coloring my hair while it was still in the falling out stage. As I rinsed the color out, my hair came out with it. I had to get a short hair cut so it wasn't noticible. The hair salon I go to suggested that I not color my hair again until it is healthy. Ask your salon for advice.

I agree about asking for professional advice... As for my experience...I'm 3 months post-op and having moderate hair loss. My colorist uses a very gentle formula and I go darker - which is much less damaging than going lighter. The color actually makes my strands thicker. Its definitely possible to successfully color your hair at this stage...just exercise a little caution...now probably isn't the time to go platinum if you are a dark-haired girl...

Hair coloring may not be a good idea if you are losing hair. Check with your stylist who may suggest more natural ways of adding highlights w/out harsh chemicals. Also, I've used a hair treatment that is great for damaged hair because my hair was thinning from my thyroid. It's called ApHOGEE and you do the treatment every 4-6 weeks (buy the treatment, shampoo, and conditioner). It's good for all types of hair (caucasian, asian, and black american). After applying the treatment DO NOT comb your hair because the protein/magnesium hardens and will soften as you rinse. Good luck!

i have been a hairstylist for 12 years. if your hair is in good condition (besides the falling out) go ahead and color. it will not make your hair fall out more. good luck!
