Question:
My SF Chocolate syrup has 24 grams of carbs?!

I don't understand why the SUGAR FREE chocolate syrup i bought has 24 grams of carbohydrates. I made a protein shake today, and ended up with more carbs than protein and 362 calories. It was Zero Carb pro. powder, cup of milk, ice, tsp. PB, and 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup. It wouldn't have been so bad, except for those 24 carbs! :-) Is there something different about these kind of carbs, or are they just the same as every other carb? Thanks, Amber    — Amber F. Bummer!! Usually, they up the sugar so they can say "fat-free," or they up the fat so they can say, "sugar-free." Here, maybe they played with carbs instead (no fair!). I doubt these carbs are offset by dietary fiber, given the product, so I don't know, but I'm guessing these are particularly empty, noncomplex, junky, inferior, infuriating, seductive carbs (in other words, they taste *great!*). Ach...don't you just hate sneaky labeling -- just goes to show we always have to look at the fine print on the nutritional info found on the back. :~(

HI AMBER, I FOUND OUT HARD WAY THEY ARE TRICKY. I HAVE BEEN BUYING SUGAR FREE YOUGART.WAS READING LABEL AND BEHOLD SUGAR WAS 3RD INGREDIENT, NUTRA SWEET WAS 3RD FROM THE LAST INGREDIENT. I DON'T THINKS RIGHT THEY CAN DO THAT. I'M SURE SOME LOOP HOLE IN LAW. REREAD INGREDIENT MAY HAVE SUGAR IN IT OR TYPE OF SUGAR.

Read all the fine print...does it say sugar alcohol anywhere? I believe there is a difference. From what I remember from one of the times I was on the Atkins Diet...it may list sugar carbs on the label, but in the fine print it could say that the sugar comes from manitol or something of that sort. If I remember correctly, it is absorbed differently...people are able to eat the items with sugar alcohol without it affecting or taking them out of ketosis. You may want to ask your dietician or nutritionalist (if you have one).

Amber, Try Nestles Quick chocolate powder, the no sugar added kind. I believe it is 7 carbs per 2 TSB, not including the milk

Since you didn't list the brand name it's hard to say exactly, but you may want to check and see if it has sorbitol or malitol or another sugar "alcohol". This is often substituted for sugar and typically doesn't cause a reaction like other types of "carbs". In fact most docs (and atkin's persons) say you can deduct the carbs from sugar alcohols from the carb total.
