Question:
Will I ever enjoy food?
I know I will never "enjoy food" the way I did before! But, will I ever enjoy eating again? For the first 3 weeks everything went down great. The last 2 days only some things are going down ok. Other things get stuck and feel like their trying to get back up my throat until eventually I have to make myself throw up to get any relief. It's wierd because some of these things are things i was able to eat just fine only days ago. This feeling is one of the most miserable feelings i've had (a lot like heartburn, but different) It really makes eating stressful. Anyway, sorry about the negativity, I just really hope someday I will be able to eat without worrying and stressing and waiting for it to start hurting me. Thank you! Amber — Amber F. It will get better. I'm three months out and definitely understand what
you are talking about. At about 5 weeks for me, things started to make me
throw up and I felt like sooooo many things were getting stuck in my
throat. I cried to my husband everyday about not being able to enjoy any
food. I thought I'd never enjoy food again which really upset me. Now,
things have gotten better with time. Some days, I'll throw up on things
that the day before I was able to eat. It just happens, and I have come to
recognize the feeling (as you said it is a "miserable" feeling)
and I just know that it's time to head for the restroom. BUT, I also enjoy
my food again...not as I did before, but in a different way. I'm so happy
to be through the yucky times (about the first 8 weeks) that food tastes
good again and I'm thankful that life is getting back to
"normal". Things aren't perfect now, but a lot better. Time
really does help and the stress that comes from eating during that time
gets less and less. Hang in there, there's light at the end of these next
weeks!!!

It will get better. I actually really enjoy eating now. I often said
before I had the surgery that I didn't even like food--tho noone believed
me.

I know exactly what you mean. I had the same questions at the stage you
are at. I am almost 7 months out now and I can honestly say that I enjoy
food more now than I did before. I look foward to trying new things and
love to eat out at restaurants. Hang in there!!

The fact that you were just passing makes me wonder if you could be forming
a stricture. Food DOES become more enjoyable as time goes. Even more than
pre-op because now we savor, chew, enjoy the texture & flavors. But
please, if you are nauseated or things dont' go down, please see the doc
for a scope. Now.
