Question:
How do you stop yourself from eating the wrong things?
I am just wondering how many folks out there are doing what I am doing and wish they could stop. I do not dump severely, but I do feel really nasty after eating sweets or very fatty fooks, yet I do not stop myself from doing it. Like right now I am sitting here at work and I feel like a steam roller just ran over me. I hate a piece of a carmel, chocolate and nut covered apple some one brought in to share. Why could I not stop myself!!!??? Will I ever be able to stop myself? I honestly feel like an alcoholic that is out of control. — SARose61 (posted on December 6, 2002)

I personally don't like that icky feeling that sugar gives me so I don't
eat it. I have found some wonderful little sugar free treats for those
times when you just gotta have one. I am always trying to find different
substitutes for those occasions. You still have to be careful though
because the sugar free stuff is loaded with about as many calories as there
sugar counterparts. Good Luck and Hang in there!

Rosemarie, I have exactly the same problem. I'll eat stuff that I know
will make me feel icky but I eat them anyway because I like the
"taste". Then for the next 30-45 minutes I feel like crap. I
don't dump (vomit) but I do feel very sick and usually lay down until it
passes. You would think that I would stop it but the next time I see
something I like the taste of...here I go again... My old eating habits
are still there and I don't know how to change them. I'll be checking back
to see what responses you get.

I think the reaction you get from that treat isn't severe enough to change
that eating habit. If you threw up violently with each bite of the wrong
food, it would change you. Now if you could change your dump-o-meter...

We almost all seem to continue to fight this battle, but I don't think you
should beat yourself up over a piece of a fancy chocolate covered appple.
Now eating the entire thing as many of us may have done pre-op..that's
another matter! Be good to yourself and best wishes!

I too am a sugar addict. I do not deny myself sugar but work to control
the amount that I take in. I try to keep the sugar grams at around 7-10 at
a time. This means a couple of Hersheys kisses or 1/2 a protein bar, or a
few mini bite sized-chocolate chip cookies. Every once in a while, I find
myself eating a little too much, then I do feel a little queasy or even
worse, I crave sugar even more, and have to back down and not have any for
a few days. When that happens, I switch to SF products which still taste
sweet until I can "detox". I'm not strong enough to go cold
turkey forever like some are...Maybe you could put some SF chocolate
products in your desk and whenever you get the craving to have some sugar,
have some of the SF??
