Question:
Any other post-ops walk around their house freezing?
I used to sleep with a fan on even in the winter. Now I'm cold all of the time and I'm driving my family crazy! Anyone else unable to handle the cold or feel cold a lot since they had the surgery? I hate to see what I'm going to be like in the winter! — Michael N. (posted on October 10, 2002)

Me too. This was the FIRST summer I wasnt miserable from the heat. Winter
is tough, I need warm clothes. Something I could never understand others
wearing. Do get your labs done on schedule, anemia makes being cold much
worse.

I know exactly what you are talking about. During the recent hurricane
Lili we lost electricity and I never did get hot. My hubby was burning up,
but I was fine. I also work in an office that has to stay cold due to
special equipment and after work I ride home in my car with no AC. Then I
go home and put on my winter long johns and cook dinner. My husband laughs
at me, but I freeze now. I guess all the padding and fat is gone now so
our bodies don't have all the warmth of before.

hi there! before surgery i was someone that dreaded the summer and really
was so glad when fall would arrive becuase i could finally enjoy the
weather without sweating. now post op there were even evenings where i
needed to put the heat on in the car. the air really bothered me this year
when it would be on. this is the first summer i really enjoyed and while
everyone else was thinking they were dying of heat stroke is was perfectly
comfortable. i really miss summer and all though i love fall and winter
because of their beauty i am really dreading being cold. i just cuddle up
in a blanket alot now. :)

Funny Question....add me to the converts! People used to come to my hous
and ask to borrow a sweater i used to keep it so cold! Now I am the one who
is freezing all the time and i LOVE IT! I think aside from being thin it is
one of the best side effects of this surgery. I live in south florida and
man oh man it can be hot here. I now tollerate it much much better!

Well I can attest to that. I remember at my first WLS group meeting I was
talking to a 1yr post-op and she saw me sweating, of course. She told me to
besure I get my sweaters out because after the surgery you get cold anf
stay that way. Well she was right. My sisters just can't believe that I am
cold now.I made myself a whole bunch of washclothes with lace around them
so I would look cute wiping my brow and it looks like I will have to give
those away along with my big clothes.Yeah! Yeah! (51/2 months post-op and
down 65lbs.)

Started freezing before I had even lost much weight.
What's physically going on with this?

I am always cold...... I am know 11 months Post-Op and down 140 pounds.
Though I will admit that this week I have been rather comfy.... folks are
on vacation in Florida, and in honor of their trip I have decided to make
my house feel like FLorida. A nice toasty 75 degrees sounds great to me!!!!

I am 9 months post op and down 158 pounds and freezing all the time. I
live in Florida and wear a sweater most of the time inside. The doctor
says it will get better when your body adjust to not having the extra fat
to keep you warm.

You can walk? I spent the first year huddled under a blanket in the corner!
LOL I really did wear long pants and long sleeves to bed. Now at about 1
1/2 yrs out it is getting better. I am still fairly cold-natured and have
to take a jacket with me everywhere, but I am no longer as miserable with
it as I was. Unfortunately, my husband is hot-natured and likes to keep the
car like a meat locker . . .

Mike, I too freeze constantly. My DH sleeps with a fan on year round, I
sleep with the electric blanket on:) I used to keep my thermastat on 68,
now I keep it on 78 and still freeze, but my family burns up. I usually
wear a sweat shirt and pants to break the chill. My surgeon thought maybe
my iron was low, but when she checked it it was fine so that is not the
reason:) This Oklahoma winter may make my heating company rich...LOL

Hi,I am preop hoping for surgery in January. This isn't good to hear. I
have wore my jacket all summer long at work. If this holds true I guess
I'll wait for menopause to warm up!

Hey Kathy - Don't let me get you off track on wanting to have the surgery
done. The decision to have this surgery done was the best one I have ever
made and I couldn't be happier with the results. This is just a minor
thing I noticed and I would gladly wear an layer of clothing rather than an
extra layer of fat any day. Best of luck to you with the upcoming surgery!

Hi Mike....I think this happens to just about everyone! Before surgery, I
was always hot, never could get cool enough..now, I have a sweater in my
office, and a little floor heater to warm my feet - and I live if FLORIDA!
It started about 4 months after surgery, and I asked my doctor about it.
He said that it's from the rapid weightloss and your body isn't readjusting
it's thermostat as fast as we lose the weight. Plus, we're shedding all of
this "insulation" that we had. I'd rather be like this than
hot...you can always put on a sweater, but you can never take of enough
clothes...good luck! Denise, 13mo postop, down 161lbs..
