Question:
why has my tastes changed and when will I like food again??
I've asked the question before about changing tastes and everyone says it is temporary. I am 3 1/2 months post op and nothing I try tastes good to me yet. What causes this to begin with? When will it end?? I am getting so depressed about all this. I eat the same things every day hoping I am getting my protein in. Can someone give me some hope that food will taste good again? I'm having a terrible time with this........ — Kim B. (posted on April 26, 2002)

I experienced the same thing for about the first 4 months or so. I
especially gagged at the thought of sweets or fatty food. It bothered me
and I missed my "old favorites." Around 5 1/2 months out the
consistent nausea went away and my appetite returned as the aversions to
those foods went away. Now I have to return to "won't power" to
stay away from poor food choices. What I have found is that I don't crave
fast foods and I am grateful for that but wish the sweets didn't taste
good! Bottom line is if your doc and dietitian say that medically you are
ok, use this time to rethink you attitude about food and when your tastes
return maybe they will be for less fattening food.

I am 4 1/2 months post-op and I don't have an appetite. I eat because it is
time. I have not allowed myself to try sweets. I do not eat fried foods or
oriental, found out the hard way my tummy doesn't want it. I was finicky
before surgery, there are foods that I can't eat because of just the
consistancy of it. My husband and I have not changed our eating out, I just
have to make the correct choice. At this point I am not worried about it, I
am doing great, have lost 90 pounds and to tell you the truth, I don't care
if I eat the same thing over and over. I am sure I am not the only one who
is experiencing the no appetite and I am sure you will find your taste for
food again.

what i have found in after nearly 6 months out from an open r.n.y. is
that everyone is different,, i read things that make people sick, and
"i" can eat them,, and what "they" can eat makes me
sick,, so tastes change depending on the person.. i drank tons of diet coke
before my surgery, i wondered what i'd do in the months i had to stay away
from it, at 3 months out i tried it, and it tastes terrible!! i drink
bottled water and i had drank some kind of colas for 50 years.. my doctor
old me some tastes do change for good,, but most of the food i've tried,,
still tastes the same..good luck
