Question:
Anyone had a problem with food backing up your esophagus?

I am 3 1/2 weeks postop lap RNY. I haven't had nausea or vomiting but I can only eat less than 1/4 cup food before I start feeling food backing up my esophagus. Of course, I stop but I can't get in near the nutrition they tell me I should. I did contact my Dr. and they may have me come in (a seven hour drive) to do an upper GI etc. to check the outlet size. I am not sure it is necessary.    — Diane H. (posted on October 24, 2001)

Diane, sounds as if you're eating a bit too quickly. Try taking smaller bites more slowly, chewing even more thoroughly and swallowing carefully, okay?

Yes, I had the same problem early on. Still do sometimes. It usually means you're eating too much too fast. Stomach is full. Slow down some and see if that works. If you still have the problem long term, it may require a widening of your tube.

I had the same problem and sometimes still have it and Im 10 weeks out tomorrow. Its either because you are eating too fast and too much. Or I find if I dont chew my food really well this can happen. When I was 3 wks out I could not even eat 1/4 c of food my guess is you eating too much. I sometimes can still barely eat that! I know what you mean about the protein required so I have opted to make yogurt smoothies (sugar free) with extra milk alot of yogurt fruit and ice put in the blend er and enjoy. It seems easier to eat liquids sometimes. GOOD LUCK

Weeks 3-5 were the worst for me. Seemed like everything would back up and I'd have to throw up to feel better. My doctor put me on soft/liquid foods for another 2 weeks and I've been better ever since. Still only 2oz meals but able to eat meats and keep things down. He said not to worry about the calories and grams right now.

If you have a one oz pouch, 2 oz will be a tight fit. If you want to keep that one oz pouch, this is a good thing! You can eat that one oz every 2 hours, and feel comfortably full, comfortably empty. It might be easier for you.
