Question:
Does anyone else have a problem w/ nothing tasting good?
I am 10 weeks post op and nothing sounds good or tastes good to eat. Is anyone else having this problem? — Penny Smith (posted on July 23, 2001)

It sounds like you have lost your appetite. Is this really a problem?
Granted, it feels very different...I had always had a very good appetite
before the surgery, and not having any takes a bit of getting used to.
However, for the first year after surgery I think we should consider
diminished appetite a blessing rather than a problem. You will have to
work a little harder to get your nutrition in. You'll have to remind
yourself to eat. I am one year out now and my appetite is definately
returning...darn. I am starting to crave weird stuff again and kick myself
when I succomb to temptation and eat something that I shouldn't. It's much
easier just having no appetite, believe me.

In most of my support groups this exact subject has been brought up. The
surgery changes things.. including taste so this is what I believe to be a
common issue. Just make sure even if things aren't appealing etc.. that
you are finding things to eat/drink to keep your intake levels appropriate.
You need to get a decent amount of proteins and etc to be healthy. Dont
forget bananas if you can as your potassium level is very important as
well. I've had several friends ill lately because of potassium
difficiencies.

Yes indeed...treat it like a blessing. For the first 9 or 10
months after my surgery nothing really tasted good. Granted, I
couldn't eat very much; but, what I did eat just didn't test as
good as I remembered. Others in my support group had the same
experience. Also, I lost my desire for sweets for a full year.
It was definitely a postive aspect of wls for me...it helped me lose
faster. But, gradually my taste buds perked up and my sweet tooth
came back.

Yes, I feel the same way. When I try something that I used to
really like, it never tastes the same. I think by time I chew and
chew everything tastes the same and I don't enjoy it by time it's
ready to be swallowed. Like the others have said, I guess that's
good. I haven't tried any sweets, other than sugar free ice cream
which does taste pretty good to me.
