Question:
Looking for chewable calcium

I would be interested in learning how people get their calcium in. I know that I am supposed to do calcium citrate. I got some Citrical Plus Magnesium, which seemed to have everything I need. That is, if I could stomach them. The pills are big so I broke them in half before taking them. They had me throwing up within 30 minutes. I am looking for a chewable and thought I would take advantage of the experience of those who have gone before me. Thanks in advance for your input.    — Pamela C. (posted on July 1, 2001)

My doctor has me on Viactiv chews. They come in chocolate, orange cream and caramel. They're very tasty with no after taste. I chew three a day, that 1500mg of calcium. You can get them at most Drug stores and Walmart. Good luck....

I take Citrical Calcium Citrate LiquidTabs, you drop them in water and they dissolve. I buy them from Walmart, in my area most stores do not stock them, so they order them for me...it cost about $5.00 per bottle with 30 pills, I take 2 per day..Hope this helps..

Hi, Pamela: I know what you mean about the citrate pills -- they are horse-sized! LOL I know that Twinlabs puts out a chewable calcium -- you may want to do a search for their website or see if they have a chewable citrate at a local nutrition store, etc. The Viactiv/TUMS/Caltrate are a different form of calcium -- calcium carbonate. Many people do well with these, but calcium citrate is supposed to be superior in terms of absorption. My nutritionist recommended a liquid calcium, which I have started. It is derived from oyster shell and is also supposed to be an effective form of calcium that is easily absorbed for WLS patients. All the best, (lap DS with gallbladder removal, January 25, 2001),

I also purchase my chewable calcium from Vitaminshoppe.com. They taste like Sweet Tarts and have Vitamin D and magnesium. Including the shipping, they were still cheapear than what I found in the stores in the Chicago area or suburbs.

You are holding diligently to your search for calcium citrate, right? Please read your labels carefully when you choose them. Viactiv & some of the chewables make a fine candy, but do not go into the bones. Carbonates can often make the blood work lok great, but do nothing for the bones. Tums & oyster shell forms are not well absorbed by anyone, really, but particularly not be RNY, or those without any stomach acid. The Liquitabs are great, I think (although that's not what I use), but you would need 3 to 4 PAIRS a day to get the basic 1500-2000mg calcium you'd need. If you read your labels, you will find that most citrate products require 2-3 units to equal 500mg (max dose potentially asborbed). As long as you know what you are getting, you will be fine. Calcium citrate should be formulated with 2 parts calcium citrate to 1 part magnesium and have additional Vit D. Citracal is a reliable brand name, just read the serving size to be safe with your doses.

I take Caltrate 600 Chewables, which you can pick up from Walmart. You can chew it twice a day. Each dose is 600 milligrams. It has a great fruity taste.

I am still pre-op and have been reading labels like crazy......lol MOST of the calcium is not made of what we need, especially the chewable ones, as the previous poster said beware of viactiv (sp) and those because they aren't worth your money since you won't absorb them.

Caltrate is not calcium citrate - it is calcium carbonate. Try the Twinlab Chewable Calcium Citrate Wafers...JR

My Dr. has me taking 2 Tums a day. They have 750 mg. of cal. per tablet and they are tasty. They also have 2g sugar per serving (2 tabs). I was told not to have anything with more than 2g of surgar a serving. Plus this will aid in gas.
