Question:
Why did I gain 7 pounds after increasing ny protein?
I HAD SURGERY IN MARCH AND HAD LOST A TOTAL OF 36 POUNDS BY WEEK 8. I FELT LIKE THAT WASN'T ENOUGH SO I INCREASED MY PROTEIN WHICH WAS DESIGNER PROTEIN. I HAD THEN LOST 46 POUNDS. I WAS NOT GOING TO WEIGH MYSELF UNTIL 2 WEEKS LATER. WHEN I GOT ON THE SCALE IT WAS 7 POUNDS MORER ADDED. I WENT AND BOUGHT A NEW SCALE THE SAME THING. I EVEN WENT TO GNC TO WEIGH MYSELF IT SAID THE SAME THING. I READ ON THE BACK OF MY DESIGNER PROTEIN THAT IT WAS NOT FOR WEIGHTLOSS. PLEASE SOMEONE GIVE ME ANSWERS. — [Anonymous] (posted on June 6, 2001)

I use a protein supplement also. If you are using it as the directions
suggest, you may be getting too much protein per serving. My nutritionist
told me to cut it in half which is 8 ounces milk to one scoop powder - the
directions say to use twice this much. One serving should be no more than
30 g. of protein as your body will not use anything over that at once.

Are you working out? Did you increase your muscle mass? what are your total
protein grams now that you have increased your intake? Are you getting lots
and lots of water? Cows milk is made to grow baby cows into adult cows.
LOL.....that is one thing I never want to be again, a cow! Mix it with
water or something really really low carb. If worst comes to worst soy milk
is pretty good with the designer protein french vanilla flavor. I also
added some vanilla extract, the imitation stuff as not to add any alcohol.

What are you mixing your protein with? Milk (even skim) or juice can really
jack up the calories. How much are you taking? You CAN get too much of even
a good thing -- 60 gm per day (2 servings of 30 gm each) is a good start.
What are you eating? Calories do count. Aim for 1200 (total, including the
protein and whatever you mix it with) or less. Are you pre-menstrual? You
could have water-weight gain (which doesn't count. We're aiming to lose
pounds of FAT). Are you weighing at the same time of day with the same
amount of clothing? You should. Are you exercising? You can get heavier for
a while when adding muscle tissue, but it's worth it in the long run, so do
it anyway. My point is that there is no magic to weight loss. Protein
supplements which are high in protein, low in fat, carbs, and sugar are an
important part of a post-op plan. So is eating nutritious foods (meat, veg,
grains, fruit) in reasonable quantities, drinking lots of water, exercising
moderately. Really, our objective shouldn't be to lose weight, exactly, but
to GAIN a healthy lifestyle. Anyway, if your total calories are 1200 or
less (including your protein), you're drinking water, and exercising and
you STILL gain weight, you need to see your doctor, because something is
wrong. Otherwise, try not to get fixated on the scales.
