Question:
how do you take iron/stomach distress
My surgeon wants me to take an additional 1000mg of iron per day in addition to my multivite. Especially since my cycle has returned back to normal since my surgery. I usually take several doses a day during my cycle but have came to the conclusion that it makes my stomach hurt and burn during this time. The iron in my multivite does not cause the problem but the individual tablets do. Any suggetstions on taking the iron and which ones are good or more absorbant? — Jan M. (posted on May 19, 2001)

My doctor writes a script for Niferex Forte. It's supposed to be better
absorbed. All I know is that iron kills my bowels. I know I am supposed
to take it but as long as my bloodwork is good, I am avoiding like the
plague.

You didn't say which iron you are taking, nor if you are going by the mg on
the front of the pkg or the elemental iron on the back. If it is ferrous
SULFATE, that is probably the reason that it's giving you fits. You might
want to try an iron that is better absorbed. If he's recommending 1000mg
by front of pkg reading, then that would still be an OTC dose. MOST OTC
irons are "2 = 325mg", for example. But the elemental iron (in
the box on the back) can vary greatly.
