Question:
I am currently taking Birth Control pills, will it be absorbed?
I have heard by some it will not be asorbed properly, therefore making it ineffective. Will I have to go to a Depo shot or IUD? I am open to any suggestions or advice. Thanks in advance. :) — perezrdh (posted on April 26, 2001)

I've got a friend with rny who's had no problems with birth control. As for
the IUD, be careful. Do not go this route if you have very many female
problems. It only gets worse.

Everybody is different. I was on the pill pre-op and post-op. I took them
faithfully. And, somehow, I am 12 weeks pregnant. I am suprised but
happy. My doctor said that it may be related to absorption but he is not
sure.

I am currently on LoEstrin for birth control. My surgeon said that birth
control pills are absorbed far down in the intestines so it was ok to take
them and their effectiveness would not be compromised.

My surgeon recommends we don't rely on ANY hormone-based BC for about six
months out of surgery. It's not an absorption issue, but he says that obese
women have so many hormonal issues and that their levels can go so far out
of whack during the rapid weight loss period that you just can't rely on
hormone-based BC to be reliable until your body stabilizes.

I have been on Depo for 7 1/2 yrs and I love it. However, I gained 52 lbs
in 11 months on it. I had my last shot just before surgery as I have
decided to go off. Be careful as this can cause weight gain. I was told
that even if I went off(prior to surgery)that it was no guarantee I would
ever lose the weight from it. For me I didn't go thru this surgery to have
additional weight from the birth control. It's now Hubby's turn for a snip!
