Question:
Does sudden weight loss affect your monthly cycle?
I'm 5 weeks post op and have lost 40 lbs. I should have started my monthly cycle 2 weeks ago and haven't. Had the ususal pms, cramps, etc. at the time my cycle should have started, but nothing. Has anyone else experienced this? Just wondering....Thanks. — Darcy B. (posted on March 12, 2001)

Darcy, I had my last period the wk before surgery in November and haven't
had a "real" one since! I did have a few pms symptoms but not
like presurgery. I only had a little bit of "flow" hardly
noticeable. But I have noticed it happened at the same time each month. I
asked my surgeon about it and he said it was quite common after the trauma
of surgery and it's impact on the body. He said not to worry for a few
months and it would probably resolve itself soon. Some people have
experienced heavy periods and I guess we are just the opposite! Oh well,
we are all different. I am married for 28 yrs and I have also noticed a
drop in libido. Has anyone else noticed this? I hope I get my
"groove" back soon!!!! So does my hubby.

My period was 8-9 weeks apart during the initial rapid weight loss period
of time. Now that my weight loss has slowed, it is more normal and
predictable.

Hi Darcy, In response to your post on ObesityHelp.com, many women will
start their periods only a few days after having the surgery. I asked my
doctor and he said it's because of the trauma on the body. I was NEVER
regular before having the surgery, and I'm now only 17 days post-op, but
for the first time ever, I got my period (4 days post op) and it lasted 5
days and was a normal cycle. I am looking forward to having normal
menstral cycles again. Hope that helps.....: )

Pre-op...I belive my last period was in April of this yr. I am now post-op
4wks and am now on my period and it seems like it will last the full 5 days
and its not like a flood but is very heavy. I did have hard cramps but I
am fine. I hope that by loosing 28 lbs and continuing to drop maybey my
cycle will be normal soon.
