Question:
Have you had a baby post op?
Has anyone had children after the surgery? I plan to start a family in the future and want to make sure the baby will be healthy and get the nutrients it will need to develop properly. — Kelley B. (posted on March 8, 2001)

I'm just a pre-op ... but I have a weblink to someone who is one year
post-op and pregnant! Maybe you could follow her progress! She's done
extremely well with her WLS and is pleased as peaches to be pregnant again.
Hope this helps! http://hometown.aol.com/mommy4alex/journey.html

My surgeon said he'd be happy to speak to my obstetrician if I get pregnant
down the road. It is NOT recommended during the first two years, until
your weight stabilizes. You need to let your body recover and lose weight
without complicating things with a pregnancy. Once the weight is gone and
you have stabilized, you should be fine. Actually one of the things
treated by the surgery is infertility. I definitely plan to have babies in
my post-op future. :)

I got pregnant 9 months post op. Of course you are supposed to wait the
full year but the early pregnancy was unintentional. I had my first child
before the surgery and my second pregnancy was without any complications.
My daughter was born in Jan 2000. She was 5lbs 1 oz and 18" long.
She was a little on the skinnier side but was very healthy other than that.
She is now 14 months old and hasn't had any problems other than normal
baby stuff. Eating plenty of protein is very important. I only gained 15
lbs. during my pregnancy. My OB was very attentive knowing my past
history.
The only problem is had was with the Glucose Tolerance Test. I was
diabetic with my son so they needed to rule it out for my second time. I
wan't able to keep the glucose down. I was sick for about 2 days
afterward. Since they couldn't rule it out I had to check my blood sugars.
It wasn't until after I had my daughter that there is a way you can take
the tolerance test my eating jelly beans. I'm sure that I would've been
able to complete the test if that were an option to me.
Good luck! Pregnancy is pure joy and even better without all the extra
weight to begin with!
