Question:
How many different ways are there to calculate BMI?
I have had my BMI figured on this web site and it is 40.6, but at my initial consultation yesterday it was 39.7. I am stumped. The insurance will require a BMI of 40. Any suggestions for me? — Kelli B. (posted on November 2, 2000)

Your body-mass index ("BMI") measures your height/weight
ratio. It is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height
in meters. For instance, if your height is 1.82 meters, the divisor of the
calculation will be (1.82 * 1.82) = 3.3124. If you weigh 70.5 kilograms,
then your BMI is 21.3 (70.5 / 3.3124).

If you're a typical American like me you have no idea what your
height in meters or your weight in kilograms is! The reason you'll see
small differences in BMI calculators is they use different formulas in
rounding off numbers.
