Question:
Are there any problems of medications not being effective?
This question is for the RNY surgery. Due to malabsorbtion are medications less effective? For example an antiobiotic, Tylenol, or birth control pills? — Kim F. (posted on September 17, 2000)

I've taken all three since my surgery and haven't noticed a problem. I had
to take an antibiotic a few weeks after surgery to clear up an abscess in
my incision and the antibiotic worked. I've been taking birth control
pills (Ortho Tri-Cyclen) since my first postop period and have noticed the
pleasant side effects (periods are light, short, and start on
schedule...also, my face has cleared up from the pill). Those things lead
me to believe it is absorbing like it is supposed to. Also, I take Tylenol
for headaches and my pain goes away....so, that must be working too.

My Doc. gave everyone in the group session a warning on the POSSIBILITY of
BC pills not being effective. It probably has more to do with how much of
the intestine is bypassed. That is a good question for your Doctor.
