Question:
Hypothyroidism. Thyroid Medicatiton
Has anyone had to increase their thyroid medication post op? I have been told my TSH level is low since surgery. — Jonna B. (posted on July 10, 2000)

yes, I had to increase mine. I went from 225mg to 250mg. (I am not sure
if it is related but my weight loss after I increased was much more
significant than my first few weeks post op.) I was also having some low
thyroid symtoms pre op too. So, it might not be post op related either.

Jonna, my surgeon told me that because thyroid medications are fat soluable
(they are absorbed with dietary fat) that I will likely have to adjust my
doseage as well (I am preop) Any bypass surgery decreases fat absorbtion to
some degree.

What type of medicine are you taking. I am responding so late because I am
in the archives looking for some thyroid info. I do not have one and just
increased my synthroid from 1 pill at .1 mg to 2 pills per day. I am hoping
this will help my slow weight loss. I really do not know if it even makes a
difference. Let me know what you have learned, Thanks
