Question:
Has anyone else experienced grand mal seizures from low potassium levels?
I have had 2 grand mal seizures, one 6/6/04, and one 9/2//05. Both were caused by low potassium levels. My surgeon says they are not connected to my RNY, but I disagree. I am thrilled with the results of my surgery (-120 lbs.) but this is a serous problem. — Debbie H. (posted on September 28, 2005)

While I have not had any seizures, I have battled low potassium for a long
time. While prior testing (before WLS) shows a lower than average level, 3
months after WLS my level went down to 2.3. I was rushed to the hospital
and spent a week in there. I also had a stricture, which was dilated. For
a while I was getting blood work weekly, as well as daily liquid
supplements and my level was pretty good at 3.0. This past July I had
hernia surgery (and also found to have an obstruction and adhesions) and my
level took a plunge again. I guess I am just going to have to take the
supplement forever just to keep me at a normal level. My iron is also
incredibly low -always has been - and I get iron infusions, as well as B12
injections regularly. I am also thrilled with my results - surgery was 21
months ago and I have lost 136 pounds.

While I have not been "diagnosed" with grand mal seizures, I have
passed out and had some kind of seizures due to low potassium. My surgeon
also said that it was not due to the surgery, and also advised against
taking potassium supplements. He said that they would cause ulcers.
However, I had to really consider the best of two evils ... life or
ulcers??? Anyway, I had to spend about two weeks in the hospital off and
on getting IV Potassium Chloride and still have to take a supplement. My
level had dropped to 1.7 and had I not gotten to the hospital when I did,
my heart would have stopped! This is a serious problem that I was not
aware of, however, I am NOW!! Good luck and congrats on the weight loss!

I have not had any seizures so far, but my sistyer-in-law gets them (She
has not had GBS). I strongly suggest you visit a neurologist who
specializes in seizures.
As for the low potassium; can you eat some foods high in potassium?

My cousin who had a RNY has low potassium and she was fainting and it was
considered related to surgery. I had a DS and also have low potassium and
my surgeon said related to surgery. I will say this ... my Mom and one of
my sisters who have NOT had WLS have low potassium also. So maybe one has
to be pre-disposed in the first place.
