Question:
Does anyone else get diarhea after taking Whey Protein powder shakes?

After taking any whey protein powder, I get wicked diarhea. Milk I can tolerate just fine. I'm concerned that I can't get the full 70 grams protein I need daily with out the protein shakes. I'm 6 weeks post-op.    — Susan P. (posted on February 24, 2005)

Try drinking it a little slower. Practically all protein drinks I have tried do this to me if I drink them too fast. I am the same way with milk though too. I am fine with them as long as I sip. It takes me about an hour to drink one shake and I am 15 months out now.

Have you tried adding nonfat powdered milk to your own milk so that it boosts the protein?

I have had the same problem. I have tested different proteins and ways of the taking them and have discovered a couple of things. First of all, I because liquids go down without any impediment (I can drink more now than before, because with no pyloric valve it goes straight down), and because I absolutely hate the protein shakes, I was drinking them too fast. This was causing my intestines to rebel. We are already wired for malabsorbtion, overload the gut that way and trouble is sure to follow. Secondly, I have always been lactose intolerant and have had periodic severe IBS sometimes triggered by wheat products. Soooooo, I backed off the whey and switched to soy for a few days. My system seems to do better on this. Since then I have reintroduced whey, but I have to sip verrrrrrrrrrrrry slowly. It takes me a couple of hours to sip 8 oz. If I'm feeling like my gut is squeamish on any particular day, I use soy. Hope this helps! Beatrice

Hi Susan. I don't know what kind of Protein shake you are using but I love the Problend 55, I mix it with Crushed ice and Carb Countdown Chocolate,( Buy it at Wal-Mart.) Put it in a blender till smooth, I have been using that since about my 3rd month out and I love it. Milk is no good for us.......makes most RNY and GBP patients sick as a dog...................try my remedy. Works great for me. Also, it should NOT take more than 15 minutes to drink or eat anything..They say that if it takes longer than 15 minutes it is GRAZING...............Besides, after 45 minutes to an hour, Protein has lost its potencey. Good Luck
