Question:
I was wondering?
Hi I am now 10 mths post op from having lap proximal rny, and am very pleased with my weight loss so far down 130#! I was just wondering how many of you long term postops have gained any weight back, and how much possilbe can you gain back, I know that you have to use your body as a tool to keep the wieght from coming back on long term and now too, but I was just curious cuz I heard some say that you can gain back thru having the proximal instead fo distal bypass! Does any of you know the percentage fo weight gain in long term, that just worries me and have any fo you gained back! thankyou! — Melodee S. (posted on November 18, 2003)

I've had 2 weight gains, sugar & fruit (sugar). I'm as distal as one
can possibly BE (RNY). Weight regain is certainly a possibility forever.
We're fighting a physical disease here, not a mental problem. I think I was
pretty blessed that I had a good program to follow, so I had a full tool
box when I had problems. I've kept 100% off, but that IS the exception to
the rule. I expected 80%.

Melodee: I gained 41 pounds back starting from my 13th month until I put
an end to it after a year. Believe me I have no doubt I could have easily
gained all the weight I lost back no problem. I thought I'd just cut out
some of the bad stuff I had added and things would be fine. Nope. I'm
flat out dieting and have only lost 1/2 of my regain. I would tell anyone
who starts gaining, not to expect it to end. Be very proactive and stop it
before it gets out of hand. Good luck. Sherry

I'm a little over 2 years post-op. I think it's very easy to regain. I
try to keep a VERY close eye on my weight. When my pants start feeling
tight, I hop on the scale and if I've gained 3 or 4 pounds, I start
exercising A LOT and cut back on calories. I would rather try to lose 5
pounds then 30 or 40 again. I think having a continuous exercise program
of walking 2 1/2 miles 3 days a week has certainly helped me maintain my
weight. I eat ANYTHING and EVERYTHING I want. I refuse to deprive myself.
However, I also realize that when I start to regain weight I have to
practice portion control. This is a lifelong struggle and people need to
realize that.
