Question:
How long until you could sleep in your bed?

I am 12 days post LAP RNY. I am still sleeping in my recliner because it hurts to sleep in my own bed. I can lay on my back fine, but I am a side sleeper and that is when it is painful. How long was it before you were able to sleep in your own bed on your side?    — Denise B. (posted on August 31, 2003)

It was 2 weeks from the day I came home. So, that was 17 days post op. Shelley

I "slept" in my bed (on my back only) with about 8 pillows sort of propped up. Then about 3 weeks post op, I rolled over in my sleep, I guess. Thereafter I could sleep as normal - fabulous.

I am three weeks post-op and I am also a side sleeper. I slept the first week only in the recliner, then I started getting in bed for day naps, and the second week slept in the recliner, and a short time like one or two hours in bed, then closer to the third week I started sleeping in bed half the night and the recliner half the night. My husband tied a rope around the foot of the bed, so that I could use it to pull myself up out of bed. About 4 days ago I started sleeping only in bed.

Denise-I slept in my bed from the first night home on. I am also a side sleeper and would occasionaly wake up in pain. I didn't have a recliner. Good luck on your recovery. Lynda ME/FL

Hi, I slept in my bed from the first day I arrived home. The day before surgery, I went to Target and bought a wedge pillow so I could be propped up in bed; getting on and off the couch was difficult. I'm also 12 days out now, and I'm a side sleeper. I sleep with a long body pillow next to me; it supports my lower belly and my leg that way so not too much pressure is put on my low back. I hope this helps!

I am 3 1/2 weeks post-op, open RNY. I started sleeping on my side, in the hospital, 2 days after surgery. The night I got home from the hospital I slept in a twin bed we have. The next night I tried sleeping in my bed with my husband and did fine. I have been sleeping on my stomach since I was 1 week post-op. Every now and then I get some pain. If I have pain I just put my little pillow under me until the pain goes away. Best of luck!

Just have lots of pillows to prop the gut on when laying on your side. I did not sleep the whole night in bed for quite a while but I was probably much larger than you. However, I would take naps at times in bed as it felt good to stretch out. Just had about 5 extra pillows that I could put wherever I needed them.

I slept in bed from the first night home. Thank goodness for pain meds! But seriously, the pain wasn't that bad for me. Like someone else mentioned, put a pillow under your belly. It helps!

I tried the recliner while at the hospital and it didn't do a thing for me. Slept with extra pillows in my own bed as soon as I got home, mostly on my back, but in a modified side position as well.

I slept in my bed the day I came home from the hospital following my LAP RNY. I did, however, use a lot of pillows for support.

I was lucky enough to be able to rent a hospital bed. I had open RNY. I was back in my own bed two weeks after surgery, I also like to sleep on my side, so lots of pillows help.
