Question:
1 week post craving chicken, CAN I TRY?
Please don't yell, but I sure want chicken. I thought maybe a few small peices of the canned chicken since it is so soft. I want to ask before I try. The thing is I am just over ONE WEEK OPST OP. Do I really need to blenderize it? I have tolerated every healthy thing I put in my mouth. Let me know if am pushing it. THANKS — candylnd24 (posted on July 31, 2003)

Just because you "think" you are tolerating something you eat
(doesn't make you queasy or cause pain), doesn't mean it isn't doing
damage. During those first few weeks your insides are raw and healing.
Your stitches haven't finished healing and you could EASILY rupture them.
Is it really worth some chicken?

You really need to stay on liquids at this point. If you are craving
chicken, make some homemade chicken soup (no celery!) and puree it really
well. Pass it thru a strainer and voila! Chicken in a cup! LOL It is so
good that I made a big batch and had to fight tooth and nail to get any of
it. My daughter would take the cup right out of my hands! It smells SOOOO
good.
If what your craving is to chew something, use SF popsicles
or NSA frozen yogurt bars (Blue Bunny makes some really good ones called
HealthSmart).
Everything is still swollen and raw inside. Don't
rush things. If you take care of yourself NOW, soon you'll be able to eat
what you want.

I tried pureed chicken breast that I blended into a very soft liquid by
adding chicken broth. That was about 16 days post op. The bad news is
that I was immediately sick and it came back up. Sorry for the bad news!
I have not tried it again. I am just over 3 weeks post op now.

What type of food recommendations does your surgeon have you on? I would
really follow his recommendations to the letter. Remember you are still
healing and chicken can be tough for some to digest. I wouldn't try it at
this point.

Don't give in to your cravings this early. You have to be extra kind to
your insides in the early stages and it's important to stick to what your
surgeon said you can eat--to the letter of the law. You'll only slow your
healing if you don't. Don't know what your surgeon recommended you eat at
this stage, but at that stage I solved my cravings with blenderized soups.
He said I could have healthy choice chicken noodle as long as it was
absolutely smooth out of the blender. I also experimented with low-fat
cottage cheese with various savory spices in it. Otherwise it was jello or
protein drinks until about 3 weeks out.

Dont do it. I was the same. 5 weeks out now, but at first everything went
fine. I had a stricture fixed today and the doc said it could be because I
pushed things to soon. Let yourself heal, you'll enjoy this much more.

I guess it all depends on what your surgeon says. My surgeon cleared me of
any kind of restricted diet at one week. I was cautious about what I ate
though. I started with soft foods and within a couple of days, I was
eating a quarter of a chicken salad sandwich. I am only 3 wks post op and
so far the only thing I can't tolerate well is SF Carnation Instant
Breakfast. Good luck! :)

Do be VERY careful with chicken! Chicken and bread (pasta too) were about
the only foods I had EXTREME difficulty with. Now that does'nt mean you
will but there are alot of us who had/or still do have problems with
chicken! It put my pouch in knots and caused EXTREME pain. It was about
nine months BEFORE I could even "tolerate" it. (I love chicken
barbeques too!). So needless to say, this really bothers me. About the only
chicken I could eat was KFC's. I like thigh meat and most of the time I
could eat theirs, but sometimes even that made me throw up. I'm over two
years out, and still can only "occasionally" eat a "few
bites" of chicken. :( Being a new post op, I would be very carefull
if I was you. If you are really craving it bad, perhaps boil the He## of
out it in a soup. That way it will be nice and moist. You know, funny thing
is turkey meat never has bothered me. Hmmmm. Perhaps try turkey meat? It's
about the same in taste. Just a thought. But do ask your surgeon though.
Stupid me, I was craving Long John Silver's shrimp and fish so I ate that
at 8 days out. I was supposed to eat pureed and never did as I chewed
everything fine. Not wise of me, but I do try to be honest. Well I puked my
guts up on the breading and greese. I tell you so you know that we all
don't do what we are supposed to all the time, and we do pay for it! Not
fun. ;)

Chicken (and turkey) were my best friends after surgery! I still cluck (
but not gobble, LOL!) and I think I might be growing some feathers. I was
on a pureed diet and pureed baked, skinless, boneless chicken breast with
Campbell's cream of chicken (Soup at Hand) soup to thin it down. It was
pretty darned good! At this early stage, your pouch is still swollen, so I
would puree and thin the chicken down pretty good so you don't risk getting
any little pieces stuck in the anastamosis (place where the pouch and
intestine are joined.)

if your doctor told you not to THEN DON'T DO IT!! why don't you try chicken
broth? at of people "tweek" the instructions their doctors give
them, thinking that since they have this "tool" they can do
whatever..but then they end up being very slow losers, gain it back or have
other medical issues. i know your not trying to cheat and you really are
craving something to eat. but think of it like this. our stomach is kind of
like a new baby's stomach. baby's start out on liquid and then move up on
stages. just because you can eat something and keep it down doesn't mean
you should. good luck to you and i hope you all the best

I am 4.5 months post op. I ate a chicken thigh tonight (just baked, plain)
and it stayed down for the first time. Every other time it came back up.
Wish me luck or it'll be a loooooonnnnggg night. Pukin' at no fun!! Don't
do it!! It's those KFC commercials that are doing it to ya, right? OMG I
remember those early weeks very very well. DON'T EAT THE CHICKEN!!! If you
absolutely must, try boiled chicken first, but don't boil the hell out of
it (as someone else suggested) that just makes it tough, you need moist and
soft, not rubbery. Good luck and see my profile, we sound very similar!

Hi. I agree with trying chicken broth at this point...I "rushed"
chicken, having it at about 2 wks post op, and it took me MONTHS for me to
get my taste for it back...it completely gagged me, and had been one of my
favorites preop. To this day I still wouldn't necesarily choose it over
pork or beef, you know? Yeah, don't rush it...good luck.

don't do it, fight it you will have plenty of urges and cravings, you must
learn to not give into them, it is hard the hardest thing of all with wls!
i fight it daily too!!hang in there you will just vomit it all up and make
yourself sore and sick if you eat meat so soon.

at 2 weeks post-op, I was able to eat "shaved" chicken or turkey
... but the chunk stuff is definitely "too dense" ... hang in
there .. you've got the rest of your life to eat chicken!!

I starting eating tiny quantities of solids about 8 days after surgery and
the first thing I tried was a little bit of chicken. I didn't have any
problem with it have continued to add regular foods to my diet. My main
guidelines are tiny quantities and lots of chewing. The feel like the
limited solids really have helped me to regain my strength quickly. I am
only 11 days post op and I'm feeling great. My doctor told me to follow my
instincts and that my body would surely let me know if I couldn't tolerate
something.
