Question:
I need a good list of soups to buy

I am on my soft food stage and I need to find a good list of soups to buy.    — AliciasMommy (posted on May 27, 2003)

Hi... I am still on soft foods, and on my approved food list were the following soups. Miso, or egg drop soup, black bean soup, or split pea soup. These are the highest in protien, and my surgeon only approves soft protien foods for the first 4 weeks.

I found the best soups were the ones I'd eat. Silly huh? But if your an early postie don't worry overmuch about protein in your soup...you just need food at this point - with no sugar. I made a lot of chicken soups (no noodles) and then pureed them in my blender. Then they had what I wanted. I also loved the cheddar broccoli soup (made with fat-free powdered milk - added extra powder for creaminess and extra protein). Bean and bacon soup blended up is yummy. Good luck!

Healthy Choice soups have low fat and sodium and decent protein. The Chicken and DUmplings blends nicely into a creamy satisfying soup. Wendy

Cambell's is making a pre-blended soup in a microwavable container. It is called "Soup at Hand" The cream of broccoli and the creamy chicken were both very good, and easy. It has it's own website: www.soupathand.com

I like the Lipton Cup-A-Soups. They are just enough so I don't have to throw anything away and easy to take to work!

Make sure you check the sugar content on the soups...especially anything with a tomato base! I've had some wicked dump fests on a couple of different soups!

This isn't soup, but you might also consider Hormel's no-bean turkey chili, which has a great protein content (and minimal carbs, considering). Campbell's Chunky Ham & Bean soup is also decent; though it has a fair amount of carbs, it also has a lot of dietary fiber, which is sometimes lacking in the new post-op diet.
