Question:
protein shakes/ anyone having problems with taking them?

I am 10 weeks post-op, and i still can't take my protein shakes. I don't feel nauseated, I just can't seem to aquire the taste. I have tried all different kinds of brands, and they are all nasty, so I quit taking them alltogether. Does anyone have any suggestions of what else I could use. Thanks.    — Melodee S. I loved protein shakes before surgery but since I have a lot of difficulty. I've posted on here numerous times that I do best with a fruit protein drink in water with some frozen strawberries added. I take it with me in the morning in a big shaker cup and I drink it through a straw on the commute. Watching traffic and listening to the radio keeps my mind off what I'm drinking. I order a lot of samples to try new things now and again but I still have a chocolate and vanilla aversion. I like ProLab and SciFit berry drinks. I tend to mix them together. Not totally pleasant but I can live with it. I was on the Zone once and do like the Balance drinks but find them too high in fat. Experiment, try different combinations, try lots of samples. Good luck.

I am almost 9 weeks post op, and my nutritionist has suggested that I try to get my protein in by eating appropriate foods, high in protein. Have you asked your Dr. about this option? I never loved the shakes, although the Atkins pre-made cans (chocolate) and Precision Engeneered powder (chocolate) weren't too terrible.

I had the same problem, until about a month ago. I just ate high protein foods. But then I tried one called MGF-2. The chocolate is pretty good! It mixes well in very little water so I can chug it down. It's true that your tastes will change over time, and something you couldn't stand last week, it tolerable next week.

What have you tried & how did you make them up? You might want to present this problem to the Protein list. Someone there could make dirt taste good. I prefer my ProScore 100 + water + ice, but others prefer to make a Creation. They're pretty resourceful and do much of it without adding a calorie! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG-Protein/

I'm 8 weeks postop and have the same problem. I tolerated the choc and vanilla shakes fine pre-op but now don't like the taste at all. I'm doing well with ISOPURE fruit-flavored protein drinks that come pre-mixed in bottles. It's a ittle more expensive but I don't use much of it. The grape frost flavor is my favorite.

I have found that the Isopure dutch chocolate, and the ASNI brand chocolate (available at GNC) are both pretty much the same consistency as chocolate milk after you blend them up. I start the day every morning with 1/2 a bannana, 1 scoop of protien poweder (Isopure or ANSI), 1 packet of sweetner, and either 8oz or water or skim milk, depending on my mood. Blend well and serve. Add a few ice cubes if you want. Tastes like a sweet bannana flavored chocolate milk, and the bananna adds some potassium too :)

Melodee, I have had a HUGE problem taking protein shakes, I just could not handle the taste of any of them. Mixing them in Milk or Water just could not do the trick. Someone posted something in the Nutrition Forum about Amino 2222 its a liquid protein (3 Tbsp=22g of protein). I mix it with Crystal Light. Its not a "milkshake", and is easier to tolerate, its Tropical Fruit Flavor. Hope that helps you.

Hi, Mel. I hear ya, Sistah! ;) I tried FINALLY a tasteless protein powder that YOU can doctor up to taste like anything YOU want. I use a packet of s/f chocolate Instant Breakfast, one scoop of Pure WPI (Pure Whey Isolate) from Craig Nutraceuticals, 530/676-8838, FAX 530/676-9040, three slices of frozen banana or any fruit, skim or soy milk, and ice. Blends up into a thick, frothy shake that is VERY palatable. You can even put this powder into other foods. It's tasteless. No fats, no sugar just 20 grams of protein per scoop. It will get to you in 24 hours.
