Question:
Does anyone go through fases where they are out of control eating?
I am almost 5 months post op and everyonce in a while (NOT all the time and please no lectures or yelling at me!) I find I DONT wait the few hours between meals and what not. Like last night...I went bowling with friends and ate some pop corn and than went to dinner and had a protein filled dinner but right after dinner i went to the movies and had more popcorn...why am I doing this? How bad is it to do it? Like I said its like once in a blue moon this happens but it really upsets me. Any help would be great! THanks~Open RNY 11/15/02 -75lbs — sandrac131 (posted on March 28, 2003)

I'm 6 months out and the same thing has been happening to me for about the
last 2 weeks. I don't have an answer for you, but wanted to let you know
you're not alone!

Hey hon, you dont want lectures but you will most likely get them NOT FROM
ME though cuz I do the same thing, I have found though that I may eat
through out the day but if you add it all up at the end of the day its
about the same amount of food as people who eat 3 meals a day... dont beat
your self up, we are only human just be carefull not to over do it! good
luck

When I hit about 6 months out, I had a sudden jump in both my appetite and
the amount I could eat. I'm talking from 1/4 cup to over a cup! I
floundered around for a couple of months trying to figure out how to handle
it. What I finally decided was that my body really WAS hungry. It wasn't
head hunger (although I get that too! ;). So I fed my body. I ate
reasonable, protein filled meals every 2 hours because that was how often I
was hungry. I went on to lose the rest of the weight doing that and I was
no longer miserable with hunger. Another thing that helped was switching to
protein-only for breakfast. I didn't get as hungry or eat as much during
the day.<p>After a couple of months, I didn't need to eat as
often--maybe every 3-4 hours instead of every 2. I also found that the
amount I could eat stabilized back down to about 3/4 to 1 cup from being
able to suddenly eat like 1 1/2 cup. I guess it was just part of the
natural progression--your body figuring out what to do with these changes
you've imposed upon it. Just make sure to eat plenty of protein (100 grams
a day is my magic number) and you'll be fine.

Why do you do it? Because your human..because it is an old habit..because
the food is in front of you..pick one. I think if this occurs on occasion
and is not a daily thing then you are OK and I would not stress over it.
Many post-ops experience increased hunger and graze right before or during
their periods so it could also be hormonal. If you find that you are
grazing all day every day and on things that are not good for you, well,
then I would worry and seek help. By the way, 75 in almost 5 months..your
doing great!

I think eating like that is only as bad as the food choices you make for
it. I think you did well because you had a protein-enriched dinner and
weren't binging on pasta dripped in butter, for instance. You could do
alot worse than popcorn too, so don't worry. You did ok.

Do you think that your increase in appetite has any hormonal influences.
When I am premenstrual not only do I want to eat more I CAN eat more. It is
scary for sure. I just have to remind myself that is just for that one day
a montha and then I get back to the program right away. I also have a few
yummy protein things in the house so that at least I know that it is just a
few more calories not more crap that I will feel bad for eating. Good Luck!

Grads is for people one or more years out to POST. Anyone can lurk and I
highly recommend it.

*********** you can lurk here til you're "of age", but in the
meantime, *I'm* certainly in no position to point fingers, but I can tlel
you that a little compromise here, a little there and yes, the weight comes
back. We have a fatal disease that is only in remission as long as we work
to keep it there. Popcorn, well that doesn't scare me. I personally think
it an excellent binge food. While bingeing is not a good idea, it DOES
happen, even to normies. But WAY better to binge on popcorn (yes, even
with butter & salt) than anything with sugar. Protein food does not
cancel sugar calories. You might try using protein supplements (but not
with milk or juice = sugar), to help put you back in the driver's seat
