Question:
Does it matter if our protein source is whey or soy?

I have a dear friend who is a Shaklee distributor who wants me to take the Shaklee Protein soy products, are they for us wls patients, or do we need whey products, thanks everyone, Susie    — lostitall (posted on February 6, 2003)

Here is what my nutritionist sadi when I asked her: "There is something called the biological value of protein which is a measure of protein quality. Whey is a better quality protein as far as protein goes. But, you can still count soy as it is a complete protein and it has good qualities for health as well!"

I have read that thyroid hormone binds to soy protein, so, since I am on a pretty big dose of thyroid medication to suppress my intrinsic thyroid hormones, I avoid soy protein, or at least try to limit it. (It is everywhere!)

hiya! i think the best protein is the one that you will use! yes, whey is absorbed better but soy IS absorbed by our bodies and i use both. my understanding is that whey protein should not be heated past boiling however certain soy formulas are designed so that you can cook with them which makes them attractive if you cannot tolerate the taste of whey proteins. i use Supplement Direct brand Natural flavor Whey protein (www.supplementdirect.com) as my "main" protein drink then i use Jarrows Iso Rich Soy Protein powder is most of my cooking (i have recipes on my website incorporating the jarrows) and that is a great way to boost your protein intake. i get mine from: www.vitamintrader.com then i also use IsoPure Zero Carb drinks (they are like sports drinks, NOT shakes) and they have 40g whey isolate protein per 20oz container. i've heard you can get them at GNC but i get mine from a couple of sport supplement stores locally (one being supplement direct) for the longest time i couldn't tolerate any type of whey protein mix - at two weeks post op they make me vomit and i only recently was able to reintroduce them into my diet. the only things to watch out for are how long it takes certain proteins to digest, casein for instance is known to "ball up" in the stomach and take waaaaaaaay longer to digest and in our situations that would not work since our pouches empty in about 20 minutes. good luck, kate www.geocities.com/katebme2002
