Question:
Has anyone else blown their diet almost immediately?

I blew my diet 3 days post op. I was HUNGRY...the broth was getting it and I ate 1/4 cup of spaghetti sauce. I chewed it CAREFULLY..and it practacally disappeared in my mouth without me swallowing...afterwards, I was SICK...could I have stretched my pouch already??? I haven't done it since...and I think I fill up pretty good on 2oz of liquid..but it's so hard to tell on liquid!! This part of the diet it REALLY hard...I want to chew..anything!! I'm I the worst loser out there or has anyone else blown it and been able to recover??    — m M. (posted on January 10, 2003)

No you have'nt blown it or stretched anything. I expect the reason you got sick was because of the acid in the tomatoes (from the sauce). It is way to early for anything acidic in your tummy.

You know, I don't think people realize how big the need to chew is. About a week post op my family got pizza and I chewed and spit out the crust on a slice. Even though it was gross it fullfilled the need I had and I finished fullfilled not wanting. When you get that feeling of wanting something so bad even though you know you shouldn't have it, I think this is where you end up overendulging. You put the feelings off for so long that when you burst you end up gorging yourself. So I always try to satisfy those needs in a much smaller way. Just remember at this point though, it could be very bad if you accidently swallow a piece so please be careful.

I'm really worried about the wording you used in your diet, i.e. "blown your diet." Gastric bypass is NOT a diet. It is a new relationship that you are going to have to form with your tummy. Eating bad stuff will cause you to feel bad. Pasta was REALLY hard early post-op, as I recall. Please, follow your doc's guidelines. You will feel better and more satisfied. I know those early weeks of liquid only are less than satisfying, but remember, it's not going to be the rest of your life ... just a few weeks ...

It is very common to have 'head hunger' where your body is so used to eating that your mind tells you you're hungry. It does feel the same as real hunger. If you are truly hungry, fill up on your liquids. At this early post-op, it's hard enough to get that in. I agree -- this part of the diet is hard and had me going crazy. You don't say if you are on clear or full liquids. If on full, you might want to try tomato soup (it might fulfill your craving for the sauce) or cream soups. Good luck!
