Question:
my surgeon says to stay away from carbs, is oatmeal one of the
or one of the "bad ones"? I am craving a bowl of oatmeal. Isn't that weird? pre-op I wouldn't touch it. also another question. I read that it wasn't wise to mix your protein and then refrigerate it to drink later. what about the premixed ones that you buy--is the protein o.k.? or does it lose its punch? just wondering Beverly — Beverly H. Oatmeal is one of the "soft foods" my surgeon allowed starting
with the 2nd week. I personally don't care for it, but it was on the
"okay" list.

Oatmeal is a carb, it's better than white bread but still a carb.... a 1/2
cup serving (dry) has 28 grams of carbs thats alot more than a slice of
white bread in fact..Yes oatmeal is healthy but NOT for a low carb diet
hope this helps

If you are craving the oatmeal then by all means eat it. Your body probally
needs something in it. I like the one meal prepacked flavored ones (ex.
Strawberry, Peach, or Blueberry). HOWEVER, and this is a big HOWEVER, when
I eat it I am ravionously hungry all day. It sets me off on an eating binge
that I can not stop. So I have found, for me, it is best to eat it before I
go to bed. Should I eat it in the morning.... well I can't stop eating
during the day even when I'm not hungry. But it may not do that to you. We
all have our own eating issues and triggers. Carbs trigger my eating,
especially should I eat a carb breakfast. So I don't eat breakfast.

Yes, Oatmeal is high in carbs. I am on a low carb and it is NOT allowed.

I agree with Daniel. I always noticed this before WLS. If I eat a bowl of
Cheerios at 7 a.m., I am ravished by 10 a.m. A high protein breakfast was
much more sustaining. Watch the carbs? Does that not sound like something
we always heard and could not do pre-WLS? Heck if I could 'watch the
carbs' I would have been 'dieting' and could have avoided this surgery.
Again I stress the idea this procedure was supposed to help those of us
that could NOT diet. I thought we could eat carbs, fats, sugars but ever
so little of these things. I agree to think and do protein first. Then I
try whatever I want to try, but in very small quantities. Seems to be
working for me. I am 2 months post op and down 65 pounds. I feel great,
but as I always state, lots of food still taste yuky to me. All that
chewing must bring out yuky tasting things I never knew were there. I was
always a chomp, chomp swallow eater.

Oatmeal was on the list of pureed/blended foods I was allowed to have post
op. It didn't bother me to eat it in the morning when I was at home,
because I was eating or drinking about every 2 hours. Now, I don't eat it
any more in the morning, because it sets off carb cravings after a short
time. I had problems with elevated insulin levels before surgery, and I am
off meds now, but I don't want to deal with that again if I can help it. I
am better if I have a protein shake or eggs or some kind of protein in the
am. But having oatmeal if you crave it is okay. Have it and enjoy it!
