Question:
Nauseous at the thought of food...What foods have worked for you?

I am so nauseous at just the thought of eating...I eat to survive. (The way it should be) but, nothing seems to stay down. I am careful to take small bites, chew slow and swallow with caution...Not working. Even the smell of food makes me nauseous & throw up...Sounds weird I know!! I feel great otherwise. Just wanted to know if anyone has found food that goes down good and doesn't smell!! Thanks for you help!    — Michelle P. (posted on November 19, 2002)

Hi...your profile indicates that you are almost 4 weeks post-op. Since this is the time frame that stenosis can develop, I'd call your surgeon to discuss what is going on. The opening to your pouch may have healed too much causing a blockage. It is no big deal (I hear) to have it stretched. Can you keep liquids down? If not, then it is even more important to call your dr. ASAP in the am so you don't get dehydrated. Good luck and keep us posted.

At about this same time frame MANY people go thru this. Very normal. You just have to try and toss many things until you find a couple things that don't make you feel ill. If you had a stricture you simply wouldn't be able to eat. It would likely hurt and I've never heard of it causing you to get nauseated by smelling food. That is more a queasy stomach thing. During the two or three weeks that this lasted for me, I found I could stomach broccoli mashed with butter and salt, kraft crackers with spread cheese (those little plastic packs they sell), string cheese - practically lived on string cheese - it's mild in flavor, low in fat and full of protein, and broccoli-cheese soup. Oh and Franco-American Spaghetti (not the O's). I know these are carby foods, but it's what agreed with me and was better than starving. I also found that drinking my water room temperature was easier on my stomach. And if it doesn't improve or you can't find foods to stay down, then certainly call your doctor! Good luck!

I had the same problem and was told it was the milk I was drinking. I had become lactose intolerant. Once I eliminated the milk, my appetite came back and the thought of food didn't make me nauseous anymore.
