Question:
Can I drink benadryl after surgery?
I read in some literature that I have, that I can't have cortisone after surgery. I was researching it on line but couldn't get to a website that stated what Beanadryl contains. And is there a difference between cortisone and cortizone. Anyway can I, or can't I? — Jessica Hernandez (posted on November 13, 2002)

I take benedryl pills, mostly for my allergies, or when I need something to
help me sleep. Be careful with the liquid, it can have lots of sugar in it.
Benedryl does not have cortisone in it.

Benadryl, also known as Diphenhydramine, is an anti-histamine, while
Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory. The 2 are different. Benadryl responds
to histamine in your body while Cortisone is a non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory medication. What are you taking Cortisone for that you
want to substitute Benadryl for?

Were you taking cortisone for an allergic condition? Cortisone makes it
harder to heal after surgery. Benedryl liquid is nasty tasting but there's
no reason why you can't take it post-op. Be careful when driving though;
it makes you sleepy.
