Question:
5 1/2 weeks post op...and worried about overeating...
I had surgery on 9/4/02 and feeling pretty good other than an occaisional bout of nausea and some slight pressure in my chest after eating. I think this is due to eating too fast, rather than eating too much, as I can barely get down 1/4 cup of solid food. I have been on solids for a week and a half. Have any of you had or are having the same experience I am after you were released to eat solid foods? — mjlward1 (posted on October 11, 2002)

Yes!! I still, at 10 months out have that same feeling when I eat to fast.
A little word of advice, try to slow down NOW, I still struggle with eating
too fast, I always was a fast eater and it is not the best thing for
us...you can overeat because you are shoving it in too fast, and that
uncomfortable feeling can get pretty intense and you can't do anything
except wait it out!!!...Best wishes on your journey.

I totally agree with you. Most of the pressure I experience is either from
eating too fast or eating to big of bites. It is habit, I guess. As far as
the amount of food I can eat, it varies depending on what I am eating. I am
almost 7 weeks out.

If your pouch was 1 oz to start, getting in 2 oz is fine. Just eat every 2
hours (not constantly) and keep the volume small. You'll be glad you did
later. I did clear liquids only for 4 weeks, so this was not an issue for
me. The soft foods I did next were fine. But my meal size was 1 oz until
goal wt.

I found that I had these feeling from two things:
Eating too fast
Not chewing well enough.
Hope it helps,

I am 5 weeks out and I am having the same problems, and I find it is
because I am eating to fast and not chewing, chewing, chewing like I
should. I find if I cut my food into small bites I do alot better, also
try using a baby spoon for some foods. I have found if my stomach can't
take anymore I burp the excess up and spit it out.

I read that, after a couple of months post-op, taking your meals relatively
quickly (10 to 15 minutes)is a good thing. It promotes that
"full" feeling and prevents overeating. This feeling is part of
the logic of the pouch.
