Question:
After having a bypass with or without a D swithch will the med still be absorbed ?
I have been on Effexor for 6 years and have been taking meds for chronic depression for 15 yrs (well before obesity)My biggest fear is the medication will not be able to be absorbed or will no longer work after surgery. I so want to begin to live again but fear depression more than anything! — Sally B. (posted on October 11, 2002)

I've taken anti-depressants for several years, starting with Prozac. I
currently take Paxil. I've found that since my surgery (RNY) I've been
able to cut my dose in half, and still feel just fine. My pharmacy can't
find the liquid Paxil, so I just cut the tablets in half. I haven't had
any trouble with it at all. Good luck to you.

I started Effexxor a few months after my surgery (depression unrelated to
the surgery), and found that, in fact, I was absorbing it so well that I
was overdosing on it! I wouldn't worry too much about it. You can always
get your doc to adjust your dosage if the need arises.
