Question:
What are other protein options for breakfast?

I have been eating deli cheeses and meats for breakfast for the past 5 weeks and am growing quickly tired of them. I don't particularly like cream of wheat (loved it before surgery) and can only down a little bit of oatmeal. Eggs are TOTALLY OUT OF THE QUESTION! Peanut butter could be an option, but I am a little concerned about the fat intake with it. Does anyone have ideas about what I could eat for breakfast that would contain lots of protein? My doctor prefers that we not use supplemental protein shakes/drinks, but rather eat our required protein. Thanks for your suggestions and responses!    — Sue H. (posted on July 24, 2002)

Cottage cheese w/ some fresh fruit or applesauce is yummy. Sometimes I put a few toasted pecans on top.

I have not been able to get enough grilled cheese sandwiches. I fix myself 1/2 sand w/turkey and it gives me about 13 grams of protein. I throw in a glass of milk and I am almost at 25 grams....I crave grilled cheese & turkey..(with lots of hot sauce)....

I eat a protein bar, GenSoy, and some dried fruit for breakfast. I give me about 15gms of protein.

Low-fat, non-fat cottage cheese, sprinkle some cinamon and splenda on it. I sometimes sprinkle garlic powder- little weird but I like it. Yogurt, any that are fat-free, low-fat and under 90 calories. There is a reduced fat peanut butter.

I don't worry about the fat in peanut butter--it's the good kind! Worry more about animal fat. Besides peanut butter with a banana or whole wheat toast, I like cottage cheese three ways: with mandarin oranges, with lime juice and splenda, or with special K cereal. If you don't care for cottage cheese, I recommend you try Breakstones. It is FAR superior in taste and texture. I use the 2% and LOVE it! NSA Carnation Instant Breakfast (blue box!) is a winner, too. Some people do well with cold cereal and milk, but I can't tolerate it. :( Kashi Go Lean cereal has protein in it if you like that type of cereal. I usually don't worry TOO much about really high protein breakfast since I eat about 6 x day and I have never been a big breakfast eater anyway. Good luck!

My absolute favorite thing for breakfast is the Atkins Chocolate Peanut Butter bar. It's 2.11 ounces and has 21 grams of protein. I keep mine in the refrigerator and take it on the run. I absolutely love the taste (it reminds me of a Reese's peanut butter cup, but not as rich), and it feels like I'm having a treat! You can buy them at Wal-Mart for $1.80 a bar.

Every morning, I have 2 Cheese Heads string cheese sticks. Here's the nutritional info for one: cal. 80; fat cal, 50; total fat 6g; sat. fat 3.5g; carg, less than 1g; protein, 7g. So, with 2 of them I have 180 cal and 14 g. protein. And they're super easy to carry along, I keep some in the fridge here at work all the time. They make a great snack too. I hope this helps!!!

Oops, I can't type today! That should have been CARBS, not carg!!! Sorry!

This is to Becky H. You want to limit your fats to 1/3 of your total calories. If the rest of your diet is sufficiently low in fat, then you can eat these string cheese things; however, maybe you could find a low-fat version.

My doctor recommended peanut butter. Even though it has some fat in it, as Cheri said it is the "good" kind. Besides our bodies still need a minimal amount of fat to be healthy. Cheese is also a good option. Yogurt or cottage cheese will work too. (just watch the sugar in the yogurt) Good Luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I should have also mentioned that I don't eat cottage cheese OR drink milk. Now you can see why my protein options are very limited. Also, I eat three meals a day only, so I do have to concentrate on getting high protein with each of my meals. Keep posting. There have been some excellent suggestions that I will try and someone else out there may have more suggestions. Please keep answering! Thanks!

I would also go for the Atkins Peanut Butter bar. It does taste a lot like a Reeses. Even though I am still pre-op (my date is Aug 7th), I really like these bars. Good Luck!

I eat my version of tuna salad for breakfast sometimes--I get the tuna in the pouches, add some diced onion and pickle and fake mayo (1 g carbs, 0 fat, 0 sugar) and I usually throw on a slab of white cheese, maybe a blueberry protein bar or fake eggs with ff sour cream and salsa, oh, and ff cheese. I have tried to move away from concentional breakfast foods because cereal has too many carbs. I also found some great fake 'sausage' that is low in everything except protein.

Reduced Fat Peanut Butter is ok with my Doc. Matter of fact, it was one of the things I could have at 2 weeks. I tired to change up most days, 1/2 peanut butter toast or 1 egg with cheese or 1/2 cup of cereal with skim milk. Sometimes I have tuna or chicken salad on toast with chesse melted on it for added protein. Good Luck

Great suggestions - also Metrx makes an oatmeal that has protein added to it. I myself eat yogurt with kashi go lean crunch.
