Question:
Anyone else with this problem?
Has anyone noticed, post-op, they have excess gas, all of the time? I didn't have this problem till about two months ago, @ 6 months out. I did start eating a lot more fruit, could this be the culprit? It's not a good side effect, that's for sure! : ) Glad I don't work too close to anyone! LOL — Kerry P. (posted on June 22, 2002)

Gas is really the only problem I have had (not a lot of nausea, diarrhea)
but I get it a lot as well. It doesn't seem to be any certain foods, just
happens. I have been taking gas-x tablets (they are very small little gel
tablets) with no problems. I have also read that there are chewable gas-x
tablets that are easier to take, although I haven't tried this myself. You
can check with your doctor or surgeon to make sure these are OK or if
he/she has other suggestions.

I have had gas off and on in my nine months. I have heard it comes from
eating foods too high in fat or too high in sugar... ? Anyway, my doc
recommended Gas-X, I take the extra strength in chewable form & it
usually stops it immediately. Once in a blue moon I might need a second
dose :) Good Luck!

YES! I am 18 mos. post op RNY open (-115 lbs). Ever since I had WLS, I
have had verrry smelly gas -- the silent, but deadly kind. It's very
embarrassing, but I cannot hold it in either. I also have wind in my vagina
area if I sit too long and THAT is embarrassing when I stand up because it
spews out and sounds like a very loud fart and I wish I could be invisible.

Its the food you are eating.I get it so bad I keep a candle going next to
me just to oxidize the gas. Not too close as I dont want to blow my ass
off......Sometimes when I get out of balance and get constipated I eat
raisen bran to dynamite the blockage and that produces enough gas to cook a
40 pound turkey, I just cant figure out how to hook up to the oven....greg

The only time I have this problem is if I've been eating or drinking a lot
of S.F.foods with sugar substitues in it. Once I cut them out, the gas
went away. Good Luck!

LOL Greg!!! I don't really have a gas problem but I do get giant hiccups.
Not a series of hiccups, just one big one anywhere from 5-20 times a day.
My surgeon's nurse thinks it could be gas trapped under my diaphragm.
Maybe I should try some gas-x myself.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I wanted to let you know that
you are not alone. I also started at 6 months out, now 7 1/2 months out.
It just won't go away, and I feel like I have excluded everything from my
diet that I believe to be a culprit. But the fruit thing is an idea! I
have been loving the fruit concept since spring began (never ate fruit
pre-op), so that is a possibility. I was hoping that you would get some
insight. But with this side-effect has come some interesting noise! It
never made noise before and I have been experimenting with new music:~) My
husband doesn't have THAT music appreciation:~(
