Question:
My PCP office called and said my Iron was low and to
TAKE IRON PILLS. tHE ONLY PROBLEM IS IRON TABLETS BURN MY STOMACH BIG TIME EVEN WHEN I EAT SOMETHING WHEN I TAKE THEM. ALSO, I'M NOT A BEEF/LIVER EATER. ANY ONE HAVE SUGGESTIONS FOR IRON RICH FOODS OR AN IRON SUPP. THAT DO NOT CAUSE STOMACH BURNING. THANKS, JAN — Jan M. (posted on November 25, 2001)

Hi jan, dont know much about this but I have heard that there is liquid
iron. Maybe this would help. Not sure if the liquid would upset your
stomach as much. Good luck,

Stay away from ferrous SULFATE, the most common one. Try maybe Perfect
Iron. Take 2 with a vit C of your choice (cheap is fine). Not with
caffeine or milk products or Tums or calcium or any other meds. It's ideal
with your protein drink if there's not milk in it. It sort of coats the
pouch. But even with toast or something mild as a buffer, it shoudl be
fine. Even 1 bite before, 1 bite after might work for you. I also take
pills with food. My tummy never was happy, ever. So, I don't tempt fate. I
say 2 pills because I know this brand and 2 are equal to what the doc's
office usually recommends in sulfate.

Hi Jan, I followed the advice of my nutritionist and not the nutritionist
working with my surgeon (who prescirbes pills). My nutritionist gave me
liquid iron and I've never had a problem with it. I take one tablespoon in
4oz. of water twice a day. Also, it's after I eat. Although I get it
through my nuttitionist's office, I believe the brand is widely available
at health food stores and, if that's a problem for you, I would try the
internet. The brand is "Natrol". In any event, things in liquid
form are usually absorbed more fully than those in pill form. Good luck
with this and with all - Nancy
