Question:
What is the deal on when you can start taking pills after RNY?
Seems many differing opinions/experiences on the subject. Liquids are more expensive... thanks. — Red N. (posted on October 9, 2001)

I was given pills for pain the day I left the hospital.

I was taking oral percocet before I left the hospital with my RNY. There
are some considerations though. The pill may need to be cut in half or
quarters so it has to be a pill that can be cut. Capsules can be bad for
the first few weeks, but by 4 weeks I had no problem swallowing capsules.
The other rule I was given is that any pill must dissolve in a glass of
water in 10 minutes or less. The only thing I've had a problem with is a
vitamin that is too big for my pill cutter. Oh, and no time release
medications. They release differently in an RNY stomach and often they
don't dissolve fast enough or release soon enough. Hope this helps.

I was taking Percocet tablets, uncut and uncrushed, in the hospital the day
after my RNY. I was instructed to resume my regular medications, pills and
capsules, as soon as I arrived home 2 days post-op. I, and three other
family members followed this regimen after our RNY surgeries and
experienced no problems at all. Good luck!

Mostly depends upon yoyur surgeon. I was back on all my pills the day after
surgery, as soon as I was able to eat pureed foods.

I am almost 4 months post op & still have to cut a pill in half. I do
have the band at the exit to my pouch so this may have something to do with
it.. most don't have a band. If I don't chop the pill in half, it's coming
back up!
