Question:
Liquid canned
Hi - I've noticed numerous posts about every POWDER protein supplement on the market and most have very negative remarks. Is there a reason nobody drinks the canned ones? (a reason other than cost?) I'm a few days pre-op but trying to eat well and get protein and have been drinking "Ultra Pure Protein Shakes" that I get at Trader Joe's for $2.19. They have 35g protein (11 oz), 3g carbs, 1g sugar and 1g fat. I am new to this but don't see anything bad and they taste just like a milkshake - Really! Will this be alright for after my surgery? — Donya P. (posted on July 24, 2003)

According to my surgeon Ultra Pure Pro is an excellent choice. I've had one
every day since having surgery almost two years ago and I actually look
forward to them now. I've lost the weight and I feel great AND I've never
felt the need to complain about the awful taste of protein shakes because
these don't taste awful. If you go to GNC and get a gold card, you can get
them for under two bucks a can. I think it must be the cost that stops most
people, but I figure I can't have much so I'm going to enjoy what I can
have. Also, I don't think Ultra Pure Pro is available in all parts of the
country. I've gone looking while on various vacations and they are not
easy to find. Good luck to you on your weightloss journey!

I bought a case of the Ultra Pure shakes for when I'm on the go, but for
everyday use they are too costly. And YES, they taste great!

Donielle: I am not an expert, so you would have to do a little more
research on this. That said, I hated every protein powder I ever tried.
Then I found a nutrition store where the owner was actually reading up on
gastric bypass so that he could better consult his customers. I was buying
the Ultra Pure Protein shakes because they were all I could handle.
However, you'd have to drink 2 cans a day to get the minimum 70 grams of
protein. Also, he told me that the type of protein in Ultra Pure is not
absorbed as well (by gastric bypass patients) as the type in certain
powders. When I told him there wasn't one powder I liked, he insisted I
try the Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex in Chocolate. He even opened a jar
right then and there and mixed me some. It was GOOD! Ounce for ounce,
it's much cheaper. Also, I can mix it on the go (no blender needed).
ALSO, in 15-16 ounces of water, I mix 3 scoops, which gives me 81 grams of
protein a day! He told me to drink only 5 oz at a time over the course of
the day (3 times a day) for maximum absorption. With all the other drinks,
I was getting sick of them after a couple of weeks. I'm still enjoying
this one. Obviously, everyone's tastes are different, but find a store
that will let you sample it...you may be pleasantly surprised...Good
drinking! Amy *LAP RNY 04-09-03* -62 pounds)

I also have had a really tough time with the powders. For me it is the air
that is introduced while blending/shaking. GAK! The shakes you mentioned
sound great. I have used CarbSolutions and AdvantEdge preprepared and they
taste fine to me. I get them at WalMart and they average about $1 a shake.
They do have less protein, though, than the ones you have (20 g and 15 g
respectively) but no sugar and few effective carbs.

I tried the caramel cream today (13 days post) and it was great. I was
nervous about protein shakes because the bars are so disgusting. I have
about 15 different samples to try but have to admit I could drink this one
every day, it is really good!!

Hi, i just wanted to say i have tried various shakes since my surgery, and
the only 1 that i enjoy is Dr Atkins canned shakes, it taste good and it is
20g protein, very little carbs and sugar. As far as the cost it is $8.94
for 4 cans at walmart. But it is well worth the money, So continue what

I have either the caramel creme or the cappucino Ultra Pure drink every day
for breakfast. I love that they have so much protein, so few carbs, and so
much calcium. You can get them online for under $2 a can, if you order the
cases of 24. www.vitaglo.com has free shipping on orders over $50, so I
get 2 cases plus a few snackies.
