Question:
Question for Catholic Post Ops- about Communion
I have a question for Catholic post-ops: What about Communion and wine from the chalice? Do you break the wafer into pieces...I've always been taught and believed that you eat the whole thing before you sit down. It would seem weird to be sitting in the pew tearing up "Christ's body"! What about the wine? I guess a tiny sip wouldn't hurt or will it (literally!)? — kathleen-Joan piper (posted on March 26, 2003)

I just let the Host sit in my mouth and dissolve if I don't have enough
moisture in there right off the bat (we don't receive communion under both
species at every Mass at our church - only one designated mass per
weekend). As far as the wine goes, a little sip won't hurt (and helps get
the wafer down)...JR

It dissolves in your mouth completely and a sip won't hurt you. No problem

I had surgery in a catholic hospital, when the nun gave communion , I had
it in my mouth before I remembered I had just had surgery- but it dissolved
on my tongue no problem.

Kathleen,
I'm Orthodox but I take communion in the same manner. The Host will
desolve and if asked, I'm sure your priest would be able to give you a
small piece. Plus the wine will help moisten and then you can swallow both
together. I will give you some advise my priest gave me. This is Christ's
body and blood. No harm can come to His own who love Him and partake in
the Holy Eucharist with true hearts and humble spirits.

Maybe I've been a bad Catholic but I have ALWAYS taken my tongue and pushed
the waffer to the roof of my mouth and let it dissolve. It was just a
goofy thing to do in the second grade and I never stopped doing it:)

I'm Lutheran and we receive Communion every other Sunday. It hasn't been a
problem for me at all. I take the wafer, let it dissolve after the droplet
of wine and eventually it goes down! I've been receiving Communion since
about 6 months out and no problems at all! I was terrified at first, too!

I guess I've always been a bad Catholic no matter what. I've always done
the same as a previous poster said..push it up to the roof of my mouth and
let it dissolve on it's own.
For your own piece of mind, I would recommend talking to your priest and
ask if it's really necessary to take communion until you are more
comfortable with your pouch.

My thought on this....Our God is a loving God who wants us to be happy and
healthy. I do not believe that God is as rigid as man. He only cares about
your heart...not about a wafer! He is SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT!!! And for
this...I am grateful!

I waited a little while after surgery before taking Communion. Now I chew
as much as I can and let it disolve and I have had a sip of wine also - no
problem.
