Question:
When is pizza permitted?
I'm just over four weeks post-op, Lap RNY. I haven't really had any cravings for sweets, but definitely for savory things. I feel as though I'd sell a kidney for some Papa John's pizza! = > I'm wondering when it might be permissible for me to have some? I'm on soft foods right now; fish, chicken, pasta, eggs, well-cooked veg, etc. Thanks so much! — CaseyinLA (posted on July 29, 2001)

Hi,
I am just over 2 weeks post op and I know what you mean. I am craving pizza
also. I had a bite minus the cheese the other day. I heard we can start
eating it at 6 weeks when we allowed to eat anything at out discretion and
tolerance within moderation. I am sick of those people when you post a
guestion like this that ask " why have the surgery if you going to eat
pizza and go back to your old habits" my surgeon said " as long
as it is done in moderation and you stop when you are full it is ok"
This isn't a DIET. We can eat whatever we want. It's not like we can eat
that much to begin with. So enjoy! You have only 2 weeks to go!

Well I was supposed to be on a pureed diet from week two
for several weeks. But I couldn't stand the idea of pureeing
meat so from week two on I ate regular food but chewed the
daylights out of it. I wouldn't recommend others to do so
though. It's taking a chance. Anyway, I forgot when I had my
first pizza... maybe around week two or three. But I will
tell you, GET THIN CRUST! I've never wanted it before as I
wanted the "filling" regular. But you won't be able to eat
much bread type things anymore so DO get the thin crust. I
used to like pepperoni but it's way to greasy now and it
makes me queasy. I suggest the thin crust with veggies. No
greasy meats! "Cut your new stomach slack by avoiding greasy
meats". Perhaps ham would be ok, and maybe sausage but
pepperoni can be hard on your stomach. Go healthy, with lots
of veggies.

HI - I am 9 weeks post-up and am still on what is called "soft"
foods. I have tried pizza and the crust makes me nauseas. Actually, any
and all soft bread/doughy products do since surgery. I would try a small
taste and see how you handle it. Good Luck

Colleen, At 4 weeks I made the mistake of trying pizza and it came up as
fast as it went down. By 6 weeks I was able to get 1 slice down with no
problem, just take it real slow. I am now at 3 1/2 months and can do
almost 2 slices in an hour and I enjoy those slices a whole lot more now.
Before the surgery I could do a whole pie in 1/2 that time. For those out
there that are going to say you should not be eating pizza, yes you can and
no it is not going to ruin your surgery. So as you can eat it enjoy it, I
do. Can't wait until I can have a little beer with my pizza.

I am only two weeks post-op (not even) and scooped the toppings off of two
medium size slices into a measuring cup. Came to just over a 1/2 c. (my
aloted amt at this time) and ate that. It was delicious, I did manage a
bite or two of crust without problem. I chewed the heck out of all of it
though. I too crave savory things.

I like to spread 1 tbls. of pizza sauce on a plate, sprinkle with very
finely chopped onions and grn peppers, and shredded mozzerella. .
.microwave til cheese is melted. . .and eat. Mmmm, the taste of pizza,
controlled portion, no bread. This usually satisfies my pizza cravings.

I ate the topping off a piece of pizza at 6 weeks. I chewed it very well
and it was wonderful. I also enjoyed string cheese with a pizza sauce
"dip". Another good subsitute was melted cheese and pizza sauce
on crackers. Just go slow and be careful. There can be a lot of hidden
sugar in tomato sauces and they can make you dump. I remember in the early
post op days just wanting things with a lot of flavor, and something
"pizza like" filled that need. I am just over a year post op and
I can now eat a small slice of pizza, if it has thin crust. In fact that
is what I had for lunch today. Go slow and enjoy.

Just my opinion: I wouldn't consider ever having pizza as a meal, at least
for this first year, no matter what my cravings are. The bread is just
wasted calories. Our stomachs are so small now and every nutrient we put
in there has to be of use. Perhaps you could order it with chicken and
just eat the meat, sauce and mozzerella cheese. At least that would be a
protein rich meal.

I think Pizza is great! Calcium, vitamins, etc. I don't always eat the
crust though. But one small slice is a great all around food. Plus cold
pizza for breakfast will last me until around 2pm in the afternoon. If you
don't make it yourself, make sure to read the labels on the frozen ones.
Some have a quite a lot of sugar in them.

Thanks to everyone who posted feedback! I did eat pizza the night after I
posted this and was glad that I did; I had no problems, it satisfied my
craving and proved to me how effective this surgery can be as I ate
one-quarter the amount that I usually do. Thanks again!
