Question:
How long will I have to wait before returning to school?
I am A nursing student. I am scheduled for surgery on 4/12/00. I won't be doing any lifting. How soon can I return to school. I would like to miss a little as possible. ( My surgery is just before spring break ) Harriet Peoples — Harriet P. (posted on March 16, 2000)

Hi Harriet: It depends on what you have done, and how you tolerate it.
Everyone is different. Email me if you want to talk. Jaye Carl, RN, open

I took off about 5 weeks, but I think I took longer than normal to recover.
Good luck!

Harriet, it differs with the individual. I've seen many here with desk
jobs return after 3 weeks since they had no complications. As a student, I
would think it depends on if you have to walk long distances across campus,
stairs to climb, lifting - physically strenuous things. If you speak to
your professors, they may be willing to work with you with some independent
study during your recovery. If you have no complications and are eager to
get back to your studies, have your surgeon give you a limited release
specifying what you can and cannot do - kind of like a temporarily disabled
statement. If you are at a public institution, you should have the
equivalent of an Office of Disability Services - they can help you with
accomodations. If not, check with your office of Student Services or its
equivalent.
Good luck!

My surgeon let me go back to work after 2 weeks. I am an assistant
principal in a middle school so it is not a desk job.
