Question:
Can Clonopin make you gain weight?

Hi folks. Does anyone have any experience with Clonopin (or is it Klonopin?)? I have been taking it for many months for restless legs at night and only recently learned that Clonopin is also used as an antidepressant and could contribute to weight gain or the inability to lose weight. Maybe that's why I can't lose this last pesky 15 pounds. Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks a bunch!    — ronascott (posted on May 27, 2004)

I have been using clonapin for several years. Had WLS in 11-02 and started back up using clonapin just a couple weeks after the surgery. I have never had a problem that I would attribute to the drug in that it made me gain weight or stall in my weight loss efforts, nor have I heard that could be a problem. Of course, that's just my experience. Best of luck to you and those last 15 lbs. Kim

Rona, I work in a psychiatric clinic and we prescribe Klonopin all the time. I have never heard of weight gain or inability to lose weight being associated with it. It is an anti-anxiety medication and works much like Ativan, Xanax and Valume. The worse side effects that I know of are probably that it can be habit forming and makes you RELAX (so you get sleepy). Good Luck. Angela
