Question:
I find I cannot eat leftovers - does anyone have this problem?

Leftovers do not digest well for me, I think once I re-heat the foods I'm also re-cooking them and cannot not digest them as I did the day it was cooked. Needless to say, this is expensive sometimes. I'm almost 3.5 months out - cannot eat chicken, was able to eat fish but cannot now. I have no problem eating pasta - of course I limit it. But almost anything I eat is a one-day meal ONLY - cannot go back or have to make fresh again. I'm very happy with my weight loss of 62 poungs.    — Anna M. (posted on March 11, 2004)

Before surgery I was the leftover Queen. Since surgery I can not stand the thought of eating leftovers, if I can force myself to eat leftovers, it would save me money, but I just can not. I am 7 months post-op and down -112 lbs, and I have not been able to eat leftovers since I went on real food. Cindy Smith Open RNY 8-6-03 -112 lbs

I can't handle leftovers either. Basically, for me, the problem lies in the moisture level of the food. Re-heated leftovers, especially if you use the microwave to re-heat them dries the food out more and makes it harder for you to digest. Basically I've given up on leftovers.

I have not been able to eat leftovers since I had surgery. For the first time or two I tried, I just thought that it was weird, but then tried again a couple of times. Each time I have tried I become nauseated and vomit. I really don't know the reason why, but I just deal with it. Janice Hall 215/125/6*11*03 VBG

Boy I am glad you posted this question! I reheated some leftover meatloaf the other night and did I get sick..blech..I think it took all the juice out of it to reheat it...so you are not alone...Kathy

I used to think, well if I can't finish it all, I'll just eat it later. NOPE! Everyone else finishes my leftovers and that's if I get them. I usually avoid ordering something I have to take home or just throw it out if it's not enough to fool with. YUCK on the leftovers.

I never really liked leftovers to begin with, but since my surgery I can't eat them at all. Since I am never able to finish my meals I thought it would be really wasteful of me to throw the rest away, but I don't have any choice now. Glad to hear I'm not the only one!

Boy we have found out the hard way that we can not do most leftovers. We have found that if we reheat them in a conventional oven as oposed to the microwave. Dianna W

I laughed out loud when I saw this question and read the other postings!! I thought it was just me! I do figure that the microwave just takes all of the moisture out and that is why the leftovers don't sit well. My dogs have gotten so spoiled that now, at 10 months+ out, they sit very expectantly at my side. I'm better able to figure out what I will be able to eat and only cook enough for one meal. OR I fix a 'normal' amount and give that to my husband and eat off of his plate. He LOVES left overs so as long as it's food that he likes, he's fine with eating it later too. I've gotten in the habit of partially defrosting a small steak, cutting it into 2-3 pieces and cooking one piece and freezing the others. Same thing with fish and chicken. If there's anything leftover, I same the time and feed it to the dogs. It can be a real waste of $$$$, but after all, aren't we worth it?? And it is ONLY food. (I used to always finish my plate, so this is quite a new way of thinking!) Best of luck to you and to all of us!! 335/193/??

I guess I am in the minority, I eat leftovers all the time. The only exception is RICE. I can eat it if I have freshly cooked it at home. can't eat it from a chinese place or reheated tho.

At first I was unable to eat leftovers. I think the reheating did something to the texture of the food. After the first year, though, I was able to eat most leftovers if they were palatable to me. I hope this helps.

I am happy I finally asked this question, I thought something was wrong with me and I felt really stupid but I guess it would have been really stupid not to ask. THANKS FOR REPLYING ALL.
