Question:
I use to dump now I dont..will it ever return..I need it!!
Hi Folks, I recently discovered after taking a bite of forbidden humming bird cake, that I dont dump any more. I use to dump at any access fat in my food even soup. After I ate that cake I had very mild diarrhea,,,,eehh! I need that trigger, I am a sweet addict. I cannot eat regular food and just binge on sweets. Do you think it will return? Everything is changing so much with me. One day I will eat something that taste great , the next week I hate it. I over seasoned some food for my family so badly because it never seemed to taste right to me but they said it was fine. So maybe my dumping will return. If not is there anything I can do to stop myself from sweets, especially with the holidays coming so soon. Hellpppp!! — neneburge (posted on October 28, 2003)

I am two years post-op and still dump but I've heard from others that if
you go back on total protein for a while and keep ALL sugar out of your
diet it will re-trigger the dumping. Don't know if it works though.

Hi Anita,
I hope you don't take this advice the wrong way, but you seem to think
dumping will keep you from regaining weight.
This surgery takes both mental and physical control.
Although, sweets is your weakness....How bad do you want to loose weight
and regain your health? To have this surgery I would think "Bad"
but we have to work the tool given to us and we can not expect dumping or
anything else to keep us from succeeding in our goal. It would be ashame
for you to come so far and fail because you no longer dump on sweets!
What if you never dumped from the get go? Would that be a reason not to
loose and Ok for you to induldge in sweets? No....You must take control of
your own destiny. You make make healthy choices with fruits at least.
Exercise also!
And, if your already dreading the holidays because of the temptations you
have a long road ahead of you and not likely a good one. You must search
your inner self and not let the sweet demon cause you to fail.
Good Luck..... Oh, by the way...Idon't dump either on sweets, but I make
the right choices for my health and weight. I refuse to let food of any
sort control my mind and body any more. Get and stay positive and focused
and you will succeed!

Many of us who have tried Atkins dumped the first time we really cheated on
it-- so, I guess that the ability to dump does return after an intense
period of high-protein and low-carbs. I appreciate your fear of living
without dumping. The last time I dumped was this summer when I mistakenly
thought that cranberry juice cocktail (that contained lots of sugar) was
unsweetened cranberry juice; although I felt like crap, I was happy as it
provided great incentive to just not try sweets again (which had also been
my undoing-- along with fast food, drive-thru's, my mother's cooking, pizza
and everything else that could be chewed and ingested). Since my cranbery
juice cocktail incident, I haven't even tried a bite of anything sugary as
I just don't want to risk finding out that I will no longer dump. It is
tough to think that this great safety net of dumping has past, and I
appreciate the anxiety you must feel in thinking that nothing will stop you
from binging. But, you have achieved a lot and you are conscious of how
difficult backsliding would be- so, chances are, you are already
demonstrating the mental toughness necessary to avoid eating sugary foods.
Good luck.

Yes you can re-set the dumping. I didnt dump on sugars, unless I ate the
whole cake. LOL Anyhow, I had surgery on my stomach at one year post op
and had to go thru the same limited eating that you have to go thru after
the WLS. When I was finally able to eat real foods, I dumped on just the
slightest sugar. I have since built that tollerance back up but it did
happen. Just stop eating sugar and eat more protien for a few weeks, it
will return.

Having 'diarehea' is DUMPING. At least, for me it is. If I eat tooooo
much of something, I get diarehea. Everyone's dumping is different. You
said you ate a little cake; maybe that why you just had 'diarehea' and not
your regular dumping? but I know for me its gotten less as time goes on.

Thank you all for your encouraging words and ideas on reseting my dumping.
I will definitely try the high protein no sugar method immediately. I
appreciate encouragement and I know we all realize that none of us would
have gone through such drastic surgery if we werent very serious about our
weightloss. Although Hazel seems to think I am going to have a rough time
of it, I totally disagree, I will do the what it takes to get back on track
and try and stay there. I am far from perfect (only 3 1/2 mos out)but I am
getting better everyday! Thanks Ya'll!

Just wanted to commserate with you-- I went on a little vacation with my
husband and discovered a candy shop that made the most delicious caramels.
I ate like a pig and I don't think I dump. I'm back on the band-wagon now
but that was SCARY!! Try going hi-protein lo-carb for awhile and that might
help. Best of luck to you!
