Question:
2 weeks post op- When you eat does it feel like its sits in your throat?
I am 2 weeks post-op. Never had a full sensation but I ate some potato soup and it feels like I have a lump in my throat. What is that??? — Kelly P. (posted on July 7, 2003)

Hi there! I never have had a "full" feeling, like I did before
the surgery, but I always know when to stop eating because I feel like I
have a lump, not necessarily in my throat, but in my chest. Normally, it
takes only 3-4 small bites to get to this point. If you are like me, then
this is the feeling of "fullness".

I know exactly the feeling you are talking about. I am 19 days post op and
it seems after I eat maybe 3 to 4 bites of something I get that feeling. I
didn't realize what it could be until I just read one of your answers to
your question. It is the worst feeling. It feels like a heart attack. If
I get up and move around a little bit, I can actually feel it moving down
and then the pain subsides. It drives me nuts sometimes. Good luck!

I had this problem once I started solid foods again. I was eating way to
fast for my body. Take small bites and wait 3 minutes between the bites.
(I actually bought an egg timer and watch the sand go down, then flip when
I take a new bite) Waiting in between gave my new pouch time to process
the food. I also began feeling fuller sooner. Not all foods I have to
wait with. Cottage cheese can go down easily at about a bite every minute,
but more solid foods like meat takes at least 3 minutes.

that lump in the throat feeling was my early warning system that I was full

You are feeling the food backing up into your esophogaus (sorry for the
spelling). Take it as a warning that you are eating too fast and taking
too big bites. It's tough to get used to-- but, if you continue to
essentially use the bottom of your throat as an extension of your stomach,
you can create an ulcer. Good luck.
