Question:
Is Slim-fast to high in sugar?
Can we drink Slim-fast afterwards? Or is it to high in sugars? — Tanya F. (posted on June 25, 2003)

Slimfast is VERY high in carbs and sugar and will mostly likely make you
dump like crazy. I would avoid it at all costs. There are some other
canned protien/nutrition drinks that are much better for you post op, and
that would be ESAdvantage, Atkins, and many others. Just make sure they
are no sugar added. Slim fast tastes good and has some nutrition and does
give you energy, but the carb/sugar/protien content is way off kilter for
post ops.

Hi Tanya- I am a pre-op, and Slimfast even made me dump. My husband
started calling it diarrhea in a can, LOL:o)

Absolutely it is! Heck if it worked you would'nt have needed WLS! Many
people are on that "crap" (not wls folks). It does'nt work. Why
put all that sugar in your body "on purpose". Heck it's hard
enough to watch food labels and keep away from sugar without deliberatly
drinking something with so much in! Please don't sabatoge your wls with
this. :)

I think there is like 35 or 38 grams of sugar, and after surgery, you may
be able to handle up to 6 grams of sugar without dumping. It is also so
very high in Carbs and sodium, I would stay very far away from Slimfast. I
use Carb Solutions and the Atkins that I get both at either Wal-mart or Hi
Health stores. I can also get Carb Solutions at my local grocery store,
which makes it nice, when I am shopping for food for my family I can get
some of my needs also.

My newspaper just ran an article about fat vs. sugar and the picture was of
a slimfast can next to a bag of m&m's. The caption read that the
slimfast had MORE sugar in it than the m&m's. I too thought slimfast
would be a good thing to drink during the liquid stage of post op, but
during my consultation visit, the surgeon straightened me out and told me
to get rid of that stuff.

Just an FYI, but Slimfast will shortly be marketing a new high protein,
low-carb drink. It may be called Slimfast Ultima or Optima. Everyone is
jumping on the bandwagon :>)

All of the previous posters are correct!!! That Slim Fast is way too high
in sugar. When I was preop I asked the surgeon about that and I was given
the big fat NOOOOO on the Slim Fast. There are other shakes out there that
you will be able to tolerate afterward. Someone mentioned Atkins and Carb
Solutions, which are fine postop, I just personally couldnt tolerate the
aftertaste to them. One protein shake that I really like is the EAS
AdvantEdge Carb Control ready to drink shake. The Chocolate ones are
really good! You can buy them at Walmart in a 4 pack for about $6 and some
change. They come in a silver container and it says Carb Control ( not the
purple ones that arent Carb Control, there are 2 different types of EAS
shakes ). Good luck to you!

I would say, most definitely, but if you had a DS or BPD/DS, it may not
bother you. Some of us or MOST of us RNY'ers dump big time, I know I did!
Slim-Fast is DEADLY to my tummy!! Very high in sugar content. No way, not
me!!This product effects people differently...LAP RNY 9/3/02

I would watch any drinks like that. I am a big label reader and I find
most of them are incredibly high in sugars. I did find one however at a
local Walgreens and it is called Advantage. It only has 9g of sugar.
