Question:
How much protein should I be getting in at two weeks post op?
I am two weeks post op, and only getting in 40-50g of protein a day. My doctor doesn't want us using protein shakes, he wants up to get it from food. I am still on a pureed diet of three 4oz. meals. If I am not getting enough protein, will this slow my weight loss down. I only lost 10.5lb in two weeks. I am a lightweight also, but wondered if protein had anything to do with it also. — Robin T. The nutritionist with the Bariatric Program at HUP (where I had my surgery)
says that in the early weeks post-op, the focus should be more on hydration
rather than protein because it's so hard to get water/fluids in early.
The 40-50g of protein that you are getting the first couple of weeks sounds
adequate at this stage and is probably more than most people get at this
stage that aren't using protein supplements...JR

Your doing fine, hydration is WAY more important than protein at 2 weeks!

I am 4 wks post op and you are doing great compared to me. I am only
getting maybe 20. I am unable to have protien shakes due because they make
me sick. I have lost 40lbs but at a stand still now.
I would say that the drinking is so much more better at this time than
food. Food makes me feel sluggish, sick, and nauseated. You sound like you
are doing awesome. Keep up the good work. Angie from Oklahoma

I'm amazed you can get that much after only 2 weeks! And especially with
not even using protein drinks. You're doing amazing according to me :-) My
doctor stressed hydration very early on even more than protein at first.
Make sure you get your 64oz water in! Then within the next few months, get
up to the minimum of 60grams a day. And I know every doc is different, but
don't feel you only have to eat 3 meals, you can break up those pureed
foods into smaller portions and eat 6 times if you want. Do what you feel
is best for you. Food can only help you at this point- more you eat more
you lose. Your weightloss is sstill great, try to weight just once or twice
a month or you'll make yourself crazy! I was a lightweight, too, and still
got to my goal within a year and surpassed it! Goodluck to you :-)
